FINALLY found a 16' Scamp!

Hello!

After nearly a year of looking, last weekend we were able to purchase a 1995 16' Scamp! SO very excited about this, but we've got our work cut out for us since it's just a shell!!

A friend and fellow Scamp owner recommended a shop about an hour away for the things we don't feel comfortable doing (wiring, running lines for propane, replacing the vent/hatch, checking the axle, brakes, bearings, etc.) but we hope to do the interior work ourselves, over time.

I will have a million questions as we get into this, but one quick question for now (which is actually down the road a bit) is about cabinets.... Given the curves in a Scamp, has anyone come up with a template for building upper cabinets?

While this is all somewhat overwhelming, the thought of being able to totally customize it is very cool. The previous owner (who hoped to restore it) built a platform for a permanent full-size bed in the back, and we'll keep that--and we also want to make a permanent small dinette in the front. He said that the "rat fur" was very dirty and in sad shape so he removed all of it, leaving just the silver layer of insulation on the sides (but not on the ceiling). At this point, that might not be a bad thing because it will make access easier for wiring.

From my understanding, it was sold essentially empty by Scamp to a company to use as a job site "office." There are some wires in it (we need to start figuring out exactly where), but they've all been cut, including the wires that come up from the brakes. No idea why....

We used temporary towing lights (and a lot of duct tape) to get it home (about 100 miles)--and it pulled fine--and I think we can safely get it to the shop (about an hour away), but of course the first priority will be getting it sealed up (vent/hatch), wired up and road-safe. Even with that much done, we'd probably be willing to use it by throwing a couple of sleeping bags in the back and doing the rest as time/money permit.

Congratulations, you certainly have a blank slate to start with and can make it your own!
Keep your eye out for ads like the one below as sometimes folks have the fiberglass inside furniture and you could pick and choose what you wanted to use. Unfortunately this is nowhere near you.

Very interesting. Sounds like you have a plan to enjoy it along during the rebuild. Keep the pictures coming as you progress. The first few months were a lot of work on mine but now I am down to the little stuff or "improvements" to suit me. But we can use it anytime, and do! The front dinette mod is on my list but pretty far down as my daughter really likes the upper bunk right now.

Wow, yes, would be very helpful to find pieces and parts that would allow sort of a "plug and play"--and that would also keep the weight down....

We got home with it late Sunday evening and this morning was the first chance we'd had to get back inside of it and do some measuring. And (duh) there's still insulation on the ceiling. The bed frame/platform is 47-1/2" but there's room to extend it about 6 more inches if we want to make it closer to full size.

But so fun to get in it and poke around to see what's there and (mainly) what isn't! :-)

That's awesome! I always wanted to buy a "Rolling Chassis" trailer and build the interior myself. So much fun!

NEATO! This is a going to be fun build to follow.

Now, the cabinets. It depends... how do you like that for an answer , but it really does. It starts with how deep do you want the cabinet, that determines the curves.

Also may depend on how much you time and money you are willing to spend. You can buy the overheads directly from Scamps online store.

Congratulation. Looks like you bought Mike's trailer. The trailer is a great project trailer since you don't have a lot of preexisting holes to deal with. I am about 100 NE of Richmond. If you have any questions on how things are normally laid out I will be glad to assist. I have a little expierence with Scamps. With that trailer I would go with a Delux layout.

Oh my gosh, YES, we bought it from Mike! Small world, huh?

We are really excited about ALL of this and we hope to get the major/critical work done over the T'giving break (if not before) at a shop in the Harrisonburg area. Our work schedules are just completely nuts and we almost passed on this, but we're so glad everything worked out so we could buy it.

As I said earlier in this thread, once it's wired up and we've got a new vent/hatch in place (and other things sealed up), we'll be ready to start taking it out, even with nothing in it. (And I guess I should say weather-permitting since it's supposed to be a cold, snowy winter... We do a lot of day trips to state parks in the winter, but we'll have to see about the feasibility of winter camping in an empty trailer!)

We've been looking for so long (and so intensely!) and this was the best ever birthday present!

Awesome I am going to follow this thread, hope you post lots of pics. I bought a empty 1971 13' Boler and am working on a custom interior built for 2. I would also like to buy a gutted 16' Scamp and do a custom build for when we take our grandson camping. We took him in the Boler this summer and was a tight fit for the 3 of us on the Queen size bed. Yes I have a Queen size bed in my 13' Boler. Next camping trip he will want his own bed.
