Unhappy Towing

In my salad days, I towed a (discovered later) 2800# sailboat with a Toyota Crown with a hitch that said 1500# right on it. God protected me and I had no issues.
That being said, I have matured somewhat and now wouldn't tow over capacity for all the tea in China. A little web crawl will find interesting things:

"Question:
What is the towing capacity of the Toyota Prius?
Answer:
Toyota does not recommend towing with the Prius, so the factory does not provide any engineering data or specifications for towing.
That said, there are some light-duty hitches available through the aftermarket that will install on a Prius. They typically are not load-rated, as they were designed to carry add-on fixtures like a bicycle carrier.
[Here the article says things I don't agree with and don't want to expose anyone to, so I decided to delete it - RCH]
Don't even mention warranty coverage...it's not gonna happen."

What is the towing capacity of the Toyota Prius

Legally, what the car can do is not the issue. It is what the car is rated to do. If you have an accident, you can be sued big time, your insurance carrier can disown you for using your vehicle "not as intended by the manufacturer", and if someone is killed, you may face negligent homicide charges. Things can get ugly.

Proper Tow Vehicles A Must!

The OP is a big boy. I mentioned many posts back that I thought he might be pushing it.

What you can't put a price on, or measure, is the level of comfort when you travel with appropriate equipment, tow and trailer. That lack of anxiety is invaluable.

I was a big boy also when towing overweight. I just was naive as to the possible consequences. All we can do is tell what we observe. He has to make his own decisions. It is called responsibility, not a popular subject in this day and age. I just opted to state the same thing you did, only a little more forcefully.

Unless you are an attorney with special experience or a Honda warranty representative, you don't know what the consequences are to his warranty. So what is the point of speculating unless it is to intimidate?

I am being nice.

Speculating that someone's warranty is going to voided or implying that they lack responsibility is simply bullying. I am tired of this mentality of bullying any newbie that asks an innocent question under the pretense of "doing it for their own good". There are ways to courteously make a suggestion and I tried to do that in my post #4, to set an example.

Unfortunately, my prediction of the safety posse jumping on was prescient.
