Hello from Colorado!

We just purchased a 1985 Scamp 13' from my next door neighbor for $1500. She needs some work but we are happy with our purchase. These don't come up very often in Colorado Springs. I can't wait to see what people have done to their little trailers to make them their own. I am new to travel trailers....what are some key things to check before our first trip?

Congratulations - that is a great price. Make good use of the Google search option here in the search pull down menu. Most of your questions have been answered in some way, plus look in the documents section for a Scamp manual.

Most used campers need bearings repacked, tires replaced if over 5 years old and frequently a new deep cycle battery.

Often the propane tank needs to be replaced as well - if the trailer has been sitting around for a few years. It should have a date stamp on it. If you take it to have it filled they will refuse to fill it if its out of date for use.

Thanks for the advise. I am off to Lowes to pick up some Red Max Pro and Barkeepers Friend. The outside is heavily molded, dirty and oxidized. Hope to get it to shine like new again.

Have the axel checked out. Have the bearings packed. Just make sure it's road worthy, the rest will come as you get your travel trailer bearings and learn what works for you. Congrats! And Welcome!

Hi Kenneth, to FiberglassRV, we're glad you're here

You SCORED! Not only a trailer so close, but the price seems very, very reasonable. All the folks that have been looking are going to be jealous!

Posting some bragging pictures

I saw the trailer one year ago when we moved in to our new home and ask the gentleman next door if he was ever interested in selling it I'd like to buy it. Due to his wives job, they are moving away and don't want to take the trailer with them. So it was a win win for all of us! Now it's not perfect but with a little TLC I think I can bring it back from the dead. They don't know if the fridge works but the heater does. Does the fridge work off of LP, 110 and battery? The right rear area has a small chunk missing at the base. Looks like someone backed it into a dip in the ground. Interior needs my ladies cleaning skills (which she is awesome at). I still sit here with a huge grin on my face as I send this text out.

I am going to second Donna's request for pictures. Your questions about the fridge would be easier to answer if we have them. If there are two rather large vents on the outside of the trailer, where the fridge is, it likely runs on propane. Propane fridges typically also run on electricity. Some on 110VAC, and 12VDC. Others just on 12VDC. Pictures of the fridge from the inside of the trailer might help identify the model.

Have you checked on the back of the refrigerator, inside the vent panel to see if there are controls for gas, 12V and 120V? Also look for a mfg and model number. There are quite a few refrigerator manuals in the documents section of this forum as well as elsewhere online. Try a search on the model number.

By the way, congratulations on your new egg. There are a couple of rallies scheduled for this summer in the local area that you might be interested in attending. One is at Camp Hale near Leadville. Check it out at rockymountaineggrendezvous.com.
