Great photos Brian, that is a really sweet setup!

I am still in awe that vintage VW's (particularly 21 window buses) and the Syncro Westy's still command such high prices.

No I had an aircooled motor in it but I was always too worried about it over heating just drive up a small hill empty. I am swapping it over to a vw diesel motor out of a 2000 vw jetta

Now that is a substantial improvement for both pulling and reliability.
Back when we were running the 2600+ member Thing-Type 181 Registry, we had a VWofA engineer in the group that had put a non-imported VW diesel engine in a Thing and pulled a 21" Airstream, not that I would recommend same. Biggest problem he cited was stopping everything. He also updated it to Ghia disk brakes. There were also several Things with Subaru conversions in our group.
