Hey my name is Brian

Hey guys my name is Brian. I am 20 years old and I have been collecting and working on antiques all my life. About two years ago I bought a 1971 Volkswagen transporter that I am in the process of restoring back to diving condition. I was looking for a little while for a Compact Jr camper to go along with the bus and I finally found one. Now I'm in the process of restoring that to tow behind my bus across the country when I am done. I do all the work myself and work out of a 2 car garage.

Do you have pictures you can post. It'd be fun to see what you've done.

Hi Brian, welcome aboard.

No offense intended but I had to chuckle at " am 20 years old and I have been collecting and working on antiques all my life".

I'd like to see both when you get some pics too. Had a 69 VW Camper a long time ago, great party vehicle when your a kid. Wouldn't mind having one now.

By the way, there's a place on Rt 44 in Canton Ct. that specializes in repairs on the old VW's, if you ever need it.

I started with my 1st Dunebuggy in 1968 and did VW's for about 25 years, including Type 181's
But... about towing a 1000 lb brick with a transporter....
Do you have an original Westfalia 5 point hitch for towing?
And a spare engine for when the first one burns a valve or two on your coast to coast trip?
Gotta suggest discussing this combination very seriously with more experienced VW transporter owners, from my own experience with VW's, it sounds like a formula for engine problems, not to mention stopping everything when going down a hill.

I used to own a 1962 VW that I restored as best as I could. That was the style that looked like a loaf of bread on wheels. I loved that that vehicle but learned the hard way that if you want a vehicle to last don't ever take it to the beach.

You have to either post a link to where you pics are stored or a url for the location, you can't post direct. Please reread my post #8.....

Great photos Brian, that is a really sweet setup!

I am still in awe that vintage VW's (particularly 21 window buses) and the Syncro Westy's still command such high prices.

No I had an aircooled motor in it but I was always too worried about it over heating just drive up a small hill empty. I am swapping it over to a vw diesel motor out of a 2000 vw jetta

Now that is a substantial improvement for both pulling and reliability.
Back when we were running the 2600+ member Thing-Type 181 Registry, we had a VWofA engineer in the group that had put a non-imported VW diesel engine in a Thing and pulled a 21" Airstream, not that I would recommend same. Biggest problem he cited was stopping everything. He also updated it to Ghia disk brakes. There were also several Things with Subaru conversions in our group.
