HI! We are Holmes4 from Oregon

Hi all!!

We just purchased our first travel trailer - a 1989 Casita Liberty (Deluxe?? How does one tell?) 16'. We have already started the process of getting her (no name yet!) in tip top shape...replacing the subfloor, new plumbing, etc. I stumbled on this forum months ago while just doing research on fiberglass trailers and the people here are so informative...such a wealth of information!!! Here are my questions so far...

1) What is the best way to clean the carpet walls (close to shag in our case)..no visible mold, but it's been sitting for a while and smells musty. I was thinking a Rug Doctor??

2) Best products to polish/clean the outside shell? What about waxing and buffing? Want her as shiny as possible.

3) I don't think the table we have is original...long shot, but anyone out there in Oregon have an original table??

4) What caulk/sealer do you recommend for the windows and skylight? We don't know of any major leaks but are interested in knowing what others use as more of a maintenance silicone...

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to FGRV. Only going to answer #4, any windows , vents and such should be sealed with butyl tape....no silicone on FG ever. It's not a long term fix and causes more problems later.

In Casita-speak, "deluxe" means it has a bathroom in front. Most do. "Standard" models have convertible sofa/bunks in front.

For polishing, look for marine products from 3M or Maguires made for fiberglass. They sell restoration kits that include a polishing compound and wax. There are different grades depending on how badly oxidized the finish is.

If it currently has a high gloss finish, it may be a liquid floor wax used by some. Don't think there is much you can do to maintain that (other than covering it in storage). When it begins to peel, you will have to strip and reapply (or strip and switch to a fiberglass wax system).

Agree with Dave about windows and vents. Don't use caulk. It will not solve the problem and it only makes more clean-up work later (especially if it's silicone). If they are leaking, the fix is to remove, clean up the opening, and reinstall with fresh butyl tape. You can find good tutorials on YouTube. If side windows are leaking, you might want to make sure the tracks are clean and drain slots clear before you resort to a full reseal. The solid plexiglass window on the back is different- uses an automotive rubber gasket rather than butyl.

Thanks, everyone! Great info - I really appreciate it!

The gathering sounds fun! We'll have it see if it will work for us.

Commenting on question 3.
You might be able to purchase one from Casita, but might be too costly. Can't hurt to ask. It might take a couple of calls to get through, but they tend to be very helpful once you get through.

Probably a better choice is to get the dimensions and make the table top yourself. Then again call Casita and order the hardware needed. They tend to be very reasonable on costs. That's a pretty easy project compared to the reno stuff you are already doing.
Best of luck and best wishes for lots of fun with your egg.

Walt

Welcome to Eggland from Hillsboro, Oregon!

Nothing special about the table hardware - you can get it online or at an RV store. We used it to build a standalone table we could use inside or outside.

Yep. But depends on whether you want to restore the original setup, with the table converting to the bed. If you know the specs on the original hardware and you have a large RV parts dealer nearby, Charlie is correct of course.
