Howdy. How did we get here?

Getting ready to retire after 40 years in the Army (29 in uniform, the rest civilian). Last RV experience was a pop-up as a kid in the 60's!

Looked at traditional travel trailers locally, disappointed with quality. Went to Airstream - very nice but pricey and not without their own issues. Saw a recommendation to look at Oliver which we liked. That led us here to learn about Casita's, Escapes and the rest.

So, here we are, reading and learning. Will tow with my 2012 Tacoma. Will buy sometime after the new year.

Mike

Welcome, Mike and Carol!

You've come to a great place to learn more about molded fiberglass trailers! As I'm sure you've already figured out, the challenge is to get a look at some actual trailers, since most do not sell through dealers or participate in the RV show circuit. There are three things you can do: (1) contact manufacturers, who typically maintain a file of owners willing to demo their units, (2) post a request here- you may find a nearby member willing to show off their trailer, and (3) attend a fiberglass egg rally, where you can potentially see the greatest range of makes and models.

Your Tacoma could handle quite a few FG trailers, but probably not the largest Bigfoots and Olivers. There is some useful data here that may help you narrow down possibilities: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...rld-43010.html. Post #297 has a downloadable spreadsheet that allow you to sort, filter, and calculate stats.

Thanks, Jon, will check the spreadsheet. We were able to see some trailers at a recent rally close by in Bandera, TX. Friendly folks!

We lived in Sierra Vista a number of years. Our daughter graduated from NAU in Flagstaff.

My sister was stationed at Ft. Huachuca for several years and I did graduate work at NAU. I live over in the White Mountains. Best thing about AZ is there is someplace nice to camp any month of the year.

Since you have a Tacoma, the Scamp 19' 5th wheel is an option. Take a good look at it. The Deluxe is really great. The combination tows steady as a rock.

Thanks, it's a pleasure coming to work everyday with our outstanding soldiers (both US and Canadian in my organization). Hope to be out on the road soon!

Honestly hadn't considered a 5th wheel but will check out the Scamp. Thanks for the suggestion.
