We had the older highlander with appropriate upgrades for towing installed, ( the generation just before the current) and it pulled a
scamp 13 nicely but once you got into a headwind or up hill the car struggled. And I could hear the back of the car squeak from some stresses. Of course I had just a regular hitch but the
scamp was so
light I didn't think a
weight distribution hitch was needed. After a bad experience in the 13ft in the cold we
sold it and went to a rpod. It was like pulling a parachute. Then we found a Tundra at a great price, 4.6 l engine, double cab more capacity for cargo and tongue
weight.
Sold the RPod and ordered a 2014
casita LD17. All this within four months. We loved the
casita and kept it 4 years but it was tight and I think if it had a side dinette we would still have it. But its gone and I have a Surveyor 201, its small by current standards but it is roomier and is 4200 lb dry. I look at it and I still miss the LD17 but happy wife is happy life. So after all this the moral of the story is.
Think hard about your tow vehicle, that 5000 lb rating is very questionable in my opinion.
Also we
sold our 20,000
casita for 16,000 so a little more upfront may get you a lot more.
BTW
Scamp is lower cost for a reason, their floor construction is highly suspect, I can not believe they use a bottom epoxy coated OSB board vs marine grade plywood. get a leak inside and the osb can get damaged. Sorry scampers ( truth be told we might still have one if we got the 16 with a bath room)
Good luck
