New - Considering Scamp

Hi my name is Kathryn. My husband Patrick and I are new here. We are thinking of buying a new Scamp. We have a Lil Guy teardrop trailer now

Welcome to the FGRV forum family. You’ll really enjoy being able to stand up to dress, and cook inside during rainy days.

After many years with a pop-up camper, we found and restored a vintage teardrop. Used it as our main camper until buying a Uhaul 13 fiberglass camper. The Uhaul made it doable for us to go south for the winter for a few years. Then we added a Casita 17 which increased the comfort level over the Uhaul. You will certainly like a Scamp no matter which size you get. Of course your tow vehicle will determine what size trailer you can pull. We had to upgrade our tow vehicle when we bought the Casita.

Kathryn,

Welcome to the forum both of you. We had a teardrop and really liked it, but our parking arrangements didn't support keeping it along with our fiberglass trailer. I'm afraid I would probably run a 'home for lost and wayward trailers' around here if we had the space!

Welcome Kathryn, After years hiking along the AT in rain, mud, snow, cooking under a rock ledge on a windy night, I'm just glad I am too old to do that anymore. We've enjoyed our Boler 1300 and now we've added a Casita Freedom Deluxe to our options so if we want to have the luxuries of toilet and shower we can.

That sounds nice. I haven’t looked at Casitas. We plan a trip to the Scamp showroom in Minnesota to pick out our Scamp

My dream was to get an Airstream until I found the Scamp. A friend has one and really likes it. It is a cutie! Plus we can get one with all the extra amenities for half the price of an Airstream. So here we are.

Welcome Kathryn! We had a T@B teardrop and sold it a couple years ago. We almost ordered a 16' Scamp; in fact we went as far as filling out our order form. But then we saw a Snoozy and that's when we knew we had to have one. Love our Lil Snoozy! Have fun shopping!

You can look at a few Scamp (as well as other manufacturers) weights in this spreadsheet.

Considering New Scamp

Welcome Kathryn. We own a 2014 Deluxe Scamp and love it. We had a used 1991 13 footer and used it for 11 years and sold it for more than we paid for it. They really hold their value. My advice is to look at the various layouts and call Scamp directly to discuss. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. A few hints: the Deluxe has a slightly larger bed which makes a big difference. We opted for no toilet since we camp mostly State parks and rv places. The toilet closet is our storage shed and it’s surprising how much stuff you’ll want to take along. The choice between Scamps, Casitas, and other fiberglass trailers is really a personal choice. Sort of like Ford v Chevy. Good luck and good camping.

Have you looked at the Escape finerglass trailers from Canada? Really nice and feel more open inside as not quite as rounded. Good luck.

Being Canadian, it's fibreglass.

Dave, we really appreciate this encouraging information! We plan to head out to Minnesota and check these out in June! They were very helpful on the phone. I got a good vibe.

Around 2400-2700# on the road depending on layout, options, and loading. I'm aware of one heavily modified unit that passed the 3000# mark (pun intended), but that's an outlier.

See the thread "Trailer Weights in the Real World" near the top of the General Chat section for actual data of various makes and models. Post #297 links to a handy spreadsheet you can download and filter by make, model, size, etc.

Best wishes in your search!
