New Owner of '07 Scamp 5'er in St Pete Fla.

Howdy Folks,

Just signed the dotted line on an 07 Scamp Fifth Wheel and I'm
pretty jazzed about it.

Looking at upgrading my pickup truck to haul this rig.

I't's set to pair up with a frontier or other small size, but I'm
thinking maybe I want to go bigger and get a 4 x 4 truck-
and get the trailer lifted up...

I'll be seeking some input on this stuff!

I treasure your advice and assistance.

Best Regards,

Joe

Welcome aboard.
I looked at one once to buy and that was one of the factors that turned me away...I would have had to turn my pick up into a flat-bed truck because the bed of the truck was too deep to allow the swing of the trailer....
I got a full 31ft Holiday Rambler 5th wheel instead to fit the truck I had, but still use my Boler Voyager for most my camping.

You might check with SallyBEE on this forum, they bought our 2011 Scamp 19, which we towed with a Frontier 2WD. They were going to tow it with a large (tall) older pickup and didn't think raising the Scamp would be needed. FYI, they are in Ft. Myers.

Does the Scamp have the factory 3" lift? If so, Scamp says it will work with any truck having a bed rail height of 58" or less. That's according to a recent poster who called Scamp.

If it doesn't, I'm not sure what the issues are in adding a lift kit. It may depend on whether the current axle is a bolted or welded installation. A phone call to Scamp would get you the answers you need.

Welcome to the "Scamp 19' 5th wheel" subset of our membership! You'll love it. The size of the Frontier should be fine, but the larger engine (on steep grades) and 4 wheel drive (on wet grass or gravel campsites) would be helpful. I have taken mine over the big mountains many times with the 6cyl. Tacoma. Just slightly slower climbing to the Eisenhower tunnel, I70 eastbound. Westbound is a gentler grade.

Thanks Ya'll

I concur with everyone. Thinking 4 wheel drive is the ticket,
as my direction often takes me into interesting places. A little
insurance and an extra set of wheels sounds like the ticket.

The previous owners used an F150 and towed at an angle, but
I would prefer to climb in at a rest stop for a cup of coffee and
a nap if I so choose without having to level the rig.

I'm going to look more into the lift kit. I found a few folks on
here already that have done that and are using a bigger truck.

Thanks for the great welcome!

5er tow rig

A chevy colorado or GMC canyon 4x4 could be an excellent tow rig particularly the 2.8 diesel.

Scamp 19 and 2016 ram eco diesel

If you have the 3" lift already on the trailer, it should fit most half ton pickups. I have a 19' with a Dodge ECO diesel 1500 4X4. I have the 3" lift, came with 14" tires that I switched to 15" and then lowered the hitch in the bed to the lowest setting. Still have a slight incline but not that noticeable when on flat ground. As someone mentioned the measurements previously with that in mind and the lift, you should be ok. My drive way is flat at the house and then slanted towrd the street, so this will give you an idea. Happy hunting.

P.S.
Having the diesel and 4 wheel drive makes hauling enjoyable, plus I can get out of the way or ahead of the idiots and great fuel mileage too!!!

I towed our 2010 19' Deluxe with a 6 cylinder Tacoma for most of its life including a trip to Alaska. Finally bought a new truck and the fit with the Scamp was the primary factor. Our Scamp has a 3 inch lift and had over 13 inches of bed rail clearance with the Taco. I ended up with a 2017 Ram 1500 because of the availability of aftermarket rear springs that were supposed to be 1.5 inches lower. I've ended up with 8.5 inches of clearance which is adequate but not excessive when boondocking in some of my favorite places. There's an initial post about the truck mods on our blog and a couple more upcoming posts that will be out before the end of the year.

John, may I ask: what is the feature on the roof above the door, right next to the trolley roof step?

The blocks were the attach points for my original canoe rack. I used it for about 3 years before adding a front receiver to the pickup so that I could load the boats forward on the pickup instead. More info about the canoe rack and our other mods on the Scamp page in our blog. There are a couple pictures of the original rack in the photo album under our profile here, but I wasn't successful in linking to them for this post.

This is the current arrangement as it was configured on the Taco. I'll do the same with the RAM.

John, Thank you for the explanation, I should have remembered since I visited your blogs a couple of times and remember the racks on the Scamp now. I was trying to deal with the same challenge. Until recently we had a 16' canoe (Royalex, 76 lbs) and two kayaks (12' Walden Vista). Simplifying, downsizing and reducing weight led us to selling those boats and replacing all with two 10' Hornbecks, 16lbs., kevlar. They will go on top of the Tacoma and by measurement I should have enough room. They will overhang a bit more in front. I'll test it all some day, probably in spring and then have pictures of the setup. They will be one above the other on a special rack, so the end can be a little closer to the Scamp and not interfere in turns.

By the way, that canoe is a beauty!

Joe, Did you get the one from Tarpon Springs with the dual tail lights? If so, that looks nice!

Trying to Close this Deal

Hi All,

I need some advice. I am having a whale of a time trying to close this deal.

This guy is kind of loopy. He's got this Scamp 5'er, we agreed on a price, but
he hasn't given me the VIN # to run a vin check. In fact he gave me the
wrong one- and now he wants me to call him back. I did. He's really got
me hooked on this Scamp 5'er!

He says the title is in his grandfather's name, on his mother's side. Claims
the guy is slightly senile, in his 90's and he's doing the sale for him. Also-
get this- he's in Kansas City for the holidays? I mean - this IS Florida!

He says the truck they use for pulling it is in the shop- and furthermore, they decided to keep the Scamp 5'er hitch for pulling "other trailers"? I didn't think you could pull any other trailer with a 5'er 2" ball hitch. So rare- only SCAMP sells it!

To top all this off he wants to do the deal and get his cash asap.

He says his Grandfather's brother paid off the remaining amount on the title- 4K. And that he had to reimburse his great uncle out of his own pocket to get the title free and clear. This is his explanation for being so ancey about the
money. I told him I would meet him at the DMV and he's stomping his feet at me. Getting all blustery about it.

I"m betwixt and between trying to make this deal work. I mean come on.

Strangest part of the story yet is in Florida- you don't need to have a title signing notarized- the lady on the phone at the DMV here explained you just have to bring in the Title signed and filled out. Then they run it and issue you a registration and title. Also for this trailer- a license plate.

Anyone want to tell me how the devil I can make this deal work without having a panic attack. My wife is eyeing me and wondering if I am goofy for not just walking away at this point...

There are more aspects of this story that are strange too.

Any Advice?

Aye Caramba!

Joe

What a Bummer!

I guess that's the way it goes. Gotta move on, I guess!

It's the one listed here in Tarpon Springs.

UPdate

So he finally gave me a vin # and I ran it.

Apparently there are two names on the title with an "or"
in the middle. Turns out one of these two people walked
into the tag office in town on Tuesday and reported a
lost title and had a replacement issued.

My contact had no explanation for this. Apparently he has
the older (i.e. lost) title.

Whoever actually owns it must know something strange is
afoot and decided to report a lost title and get a new one.

Ah - life...

Glad I still have my money in my pocket!

Watch out folks...!
