Joe, Did you get the one from Tarpon Springs with the dual tail lights? If so, that looks nice!

Trying to Close this Deal

Hi All,

I need some advice. I am having a whale of a time trying to close this deal.

This guy is kind of loopy. He's got this Scamp 5'er, we agreed on a price, but
he hasn't given me the VIN # to run a vin check. In fact he gave me the
wrong one- and now he wants me to call him back. I did. He's really got
me hooked on this Scamp 5'er!

He says the title is in his grandfather's name, on his mother's side. Claims
the guy is slightly senile, in his 90's and he's doing the sale for him. Also-
get this- he's in Kansas City for the holidays? I mean - this IS Florida!

He says the truck they use for pulling it is in the shop- and furthermore, they decided to keep the Scamp 5'er hitch for pulling "other trailers"? I didn't think you could pull any other trailer with a 5'er 2" ball hitch. So rare- only SCAMP sells it!

To top all this off he wants to do the deal and get his cash asap.

He says his Grandfather's brother paid off the remaining amount on the title- 4K. And that he had to reimburse his great uncle out of his own pocket to get the title free and clear. This is his explanation for being so ancey about the
money. I told him I would meet him at the DMV and he's stomping his feet at me. Getting all blustery about it.

I"m betwixt and between trying to make this deal work. I mean come on.

Strangest part of the story yet is in Florida- you don't need to have a title signing notarized- the lady on the phone at the DMV here explained you just have to bring in the Title signed and filled out. Then they run it and issue you a registration and title. Also for this trailer- a license plate.

Anyone want to tell me how the devil I can make this deal work without having a panic attack. My wife is eyeing me and wondering if I am goofy for not just walking away at this point...

There are more aspects of this story that are strange too.

Any Advice?

Aye Caramba!

Joe

What a Bummer!

I guess that's the way it goes. Gotta move on, I guess!

It's the one listed here in Tarpon Springs.

UPdate

So he finally gave me a vin # and I ran it.

Apparently there are two names on the title with an "or"
in the middle. Turns out one of these two people walked
into the tag office in town on Tuesday and reported a
lost title and had a replacement issued.

My contact had no explanation for this. Apparently he has
the older (i.e. lost) title.

Whoever actually owns it must know something strange is
afoot and decided to report a lost title and get a new one.

Ah - life...

Glad I still have my money in my pocket!

Watch out folks...!

I am so glad you have not parted with your money on this one. A small consolation is that you may wasted a lot of the scammer's time. This smells of fraud, which I think is more serious, but hard to prosecute if it did not go beyond an attempt. I may be wrong. There is another Scamp 19 out there somewhere waiting to be discovered, and it is real, Keep looking!

The Vermont DMV has only four characters to describe the make on the registration, so mine is officially a SCAM. How is that?

Take it from one who was scamed on craigs list...This smelled real bad.
Glad your money is safe and another will come your way.
A said if your money was given and it's a scam...you loose your money unless you bring civil suit but just try and get money from a stone.

We bought our Scamp in FL almost 7 years ago. Fortunately the seller agreed to meet us at DMV and we did all the paperwork right there, which really put my mind at ease.
Sorry it doesn't seem to be working out. I was toying with the idea of driving down there to check it out for a couple weeks now, it definitely does look like a nice Scamp.
Still debating if I want to jump to a 5er and be obligated to continue owning a pickup, or sticking with a bumper pull and getting a van.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Dave/John, Marilyn - all three of you would be very happy with the way the Scamp 5th tows. Head wind, tail or side, pretty much no worries about the weight distribution, etc. Keep the truck is what I'd say. And besides, you have the majority in this vote.

how to run a vin check

In Florida, there is a link on the DMV website. It's a little hard to find,
but it's there. If you google your state and something like "vin check"
it should come up. It will tell you the name on the title and when it was issued.
