Your ideal Fiberglass-Composite RV

Hello
Me and my wife are shopping for a Composite RV.
We would like to ask the community what would be their favorite RV
size, features, options, brand etc.. we are new to camping.
We are looking for something around 17 to 18 feet to sleep 4

thanks
Mike

Welcome to FGRV, Mike!

Hmmm... It's kind of hard to answer your question with knowing a little more: new or used, budget range, your vehicle's tow rating, where you plan to camp- developed campgrounds with hook-ups and bathroom facilities or primitive sites.

Offhand, the Escape 17B with bunk option comes to mind. Here's one that sold a while back showing the bunk set-up: 2012 Escape 17B. Downside is used units are very rare, and there's a long wait for a new one.

A Scamp 16 (layout 4) will sleep four, but it has some limitations: the main bed is narrow (45"), the upper bunk is weight limited to 120 pounds, and the side bath is really small.

As far as older models in that size range that sleep four, Bigfoot 17G, Boler 1700, Trillium 5500, and my personal favorite, Bonair Oxygen, come to mind. Shopping used, it's best to be somewhat flexible.

As for me, my ideal four-person molded fiberglass camper is a Scamp 13 standard. Why?... Because it's sitting in my driveway!

Best wishes in your search!

Amazing! How did you find out, Donna? I didn't see anything about it on the link, or did I miss it?

When I was reviewing old threads on the Geographic, I saw a "before" picture, and this one looks in even better shape.

It's not on Flyte Camps page yet. I heard about it on Facebook. I think it was the Langley campout that some of the participants got to go and see it. I haven't heard how complete the interior might be. Nor have I seen any photos of that. I saw Bardy's 1960 at the Oregon Gathering, the interior was very cool. I'm sure Flyte Camp will do it proud.

We should probably get back to answering the OPs question....

Donna you are correct on Flyte Camps plans to restore a Geographic as we have the HC1 s parked right next to Flyte Camps glorious restore of Newton canned ham ,"unbelievable craftsmanship" at the vintage rv show here in Palm Springs for modernism week. They told us of there plans to restore the geographic they acquired . They told us that the previous owner had found it as a true barn find for $250.00 completely gutted but did not say what they paid for it. I cant even amagine what this trailer will be valued at after they get done with it maybe " priceless" .

Oh man Donna - now I have to go out and buy a lottery ticket!

But seriously, the best rigs I can think of to sleep 4 are the Escape 17 and 19 (with bunk/cot options). There's a 19 for sale right now with a cot option. You rarely see a Casita with bunks but I think you can still order them. There's also Parkliner which has a bunk option and several Scamp models have the gaucho couch that conveys to bunks - they don't hold much weight though.

Good luck - it's all fun, and don't forget if it's the kids you are trying to fit in, it doesn't take long until they want to sleep out in a tent!

Decide what you need and also what you would like to have. With all the units available you shouldn't have much trouble getting both if you shop around.

The Roulottes Profil 14 looks pretty nice and has bunks, so it sleeps 4. It doesn't get much mention on this forum, but the structure is built of molded fiberglass sections which overlap and are joined with adhesive. Dry weight is under 1600 lbs. The shape is not as rounded as most other molded trailers, though, so wind resistance at highway speed will be greater and fuel economy will not be quite as good. They have some longer models that sleep 4 also.

It looks like laminated construction with a thin coat of fibreglass on the panels, which might be why it doesn't get mentioned on this molded fibreglass forum.

I just pulled this from the brochure "Monocoque roof and U.V. treated fiberglass"... not molded.

My bad! About a year ago I communicated with the folks who build the Roulottes Prolite, and I really thought they stated that the FG panel sections came out of molds. However, I found the Prolite factory tour video and can see the wood bonded on the inside of the wall. That is definitely a stickie.

As you'll hear it's very much personal preference. Any of the "major manufacturers" are putting out quality campers, and you'll find owners of all the different kinds here. It really depends on how you plan to use it.

It's been mentioned before, I'll mention it again: If you're new to "camping", trailer style, consider renting a camper for the weekend. You may find you don't need all the amenities many come with. Or that you just can't live without many.

A lot of people don't want or need a bathroom. Others couldn't imagine a camper without one. Some love having an oven, others really couldn't see themselves baking when camping. Some don't even care to have a fridge.

From there it'll really come down to money and if you want new or used. I have a Bigfoot, which is Dang expensive new. In fact it wan't cheap used. But it was what I really wanted, so I went for it. But the newest I could afford was an early 90s trailer. So it'll really depend. I'd love an Escape or Oliver or Parkliner. But they're just so far out of my financial reach, I don't even consider them, new or used.

I would have to agree with Zach. I've been boondocking for 50 years and it took me most of that time to figure out what I want, what I need and what I can afford. Renting for one or more trips will likely give you some valuable insights. Shop around. Determine what you want before you buy and you're likely to be more more satisfied with your purchase, and use it more often.

I don't think renting a fiberglass camper would be totally necessary. A stick built would be fine. Just to get a trailer out on the land and see what they think. There are space issues that come up specifically with fiberglass, but just to see what they think of a trailer and all the appliances would be enough.
