Great deal, I wonder if they ship north of the 49th? I guess a quick email might find out for me.

Great price, but the payment method looks like a bit of a hassel. You can't pay directly with a Credit Card or PayPal even.

Not to be confused with Overstock.com which is a place I've bought from several times. Never heard of this one. They're in New Jersey, I wonder if there's any danger of flooded merchandise? Just a wild thought. That looks to be an amazing price, and I'm wondering why??

They do claim to have a 30 day return policy, but do not accept phone orders nor list a street address or phone number that I can find.

Theron, you're right! They want payment via something called "green dot money pak". Weird!

A bit too good to be true I think. Their payment system is strange and offers the buyer way less protection.

OK, what doesn't pass the smell test on this one? Please explain. The link looks complete and the website has had a lot of work done on it. Just wondering because I don't need another generator!

This is enough to make me run. Why not a copy of my birth certificate and s.s.# too? Raz

"If you want to pay through Google Checkout please DO NOT place any order(s) using GreenDot MoneyPak System, email us your request with a complete list of products you want to purchase from us and our payment department will issue the invoice manually. For security purposes, please conceal the first 12 digits of your card number, leaving only the last 4 digits visible. The front of your driver's license. Please ensure it is a clear and legible copy. Proof of address for the delivery address you registered ( Acceptable forms of proof of address include the following: driver's license with matching address, bank statement, credit card bill, water, phone or other utility bill, business license) along with your order request. Personally I'd be very suspicious. I sold my one year old Honda 2000i this fall for $800. Never used it, paid $899 for it and that was the best price I'd seen anywhere.

Maybe someone who is located in New Jersey can check them out with BBB or corporate charters?

The domain info posted by Mik shows:
Record created on 05-Dec-2012.
Database last updated on 7-Jan-2013 11:32:38 EST.
Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.WEB4AFRICA.COM
NS2.WEB4AFRICA.COM
NS3.WEB4AFRICA.COM
NS4.WEB4AFRICA.COM

"Record created on..." --does this mean the website went up just last month? That's what it's suggesting to my mind. And then the domain servers are in africa; doesn't that make one wonder? Anyone ever hear of "Nigerian scams"? Those are things that, taken together with all else, makes me suspicious.

However, if someone wants to risk $500 and report back as to the success or failure of receiving the merchandise, I won't stand in the way. It would be wonderful if we really could get these gennies for half price.

MoneyPak schemes

According to the GreenDot website, MoneyPak is a tool to get funds from people without bank accounts to some service providers or into various types of cards or other payment systems (such as PayPal) which are then used for purchases. Mostly, of course, it's a system for extracting a high transaction fee for each transfer of funds.

GreenDot warns not to provide a MoneyPak number to anyone not on their approved company list, which doesn't look like it includes this "overstock" vendor. This vendor "process our customers Green Dot MoneyPak payments through PayPal", which confirms that they are not authorized to accept MoneyPak; this is like giving your bank card and PIN to someone so they can go pay for something for you - in this case they promise to apply your MoneyPak funds to a PayPal account (which you never see), which they use to pay themselves.

Here's the Better Business Bureau message regarding MoneyPak scams, which reads like a description of Overstock Liquidation Sales (although it does not specifically name them):
BBB, DPS warn of MoneyPak scams

Neither GreenDot nor Overstock Liquidation Sales is a company that I would choose to deal with, although I think GreenDot is legitimate financial services companying just targeting the same consumers as the "payday loan" outfits. It looks to me like the only certain thing is that your $500 will go away... a generator may or may not appear.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

BBB Check

I ran a BBB check on this company, since their website shows the BBB symbol. BBB says they have no record of such a company.

The OverstockLiquidationSales website says the company ships from Paulsboro, NJ, but no physical address for the company.

The wesbsite shows the Visa and Mastercard symbols, but you can't actually buy any of their products this way.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!

I’m Not Sure This Website is Legit.
  • Look for the BBB seal on the website and check out the business’ review on BBB.org.
  • Make sure the site has a contact page with a physical address and phone number. You can also check whois.net to see who owns the website. Be very wary of web registrations that are private.
  • To ensure your payment info is secure, look in the address box for the “s” in https:// and in the lower-right corner for the “lock” symbol.
  • When shopping online, pay with a credit card. Under federal law, you can dispute the charges if you do not receive the item and contest unauthorized charges. Many card issuers have “zero liability” policies which will protect you if your credit card number is stolen.

There is a multi page thread discussing this sale at RV.net that doesn't look good...

Given the results of your research Brian, I will gladly not look any further myself. You are absolutely correct, stay away from them.

Didn't Honda just do a recall on a whole range of serial numbers for this unit? One more thing to toss into the mix of cautionary considerations!
