So it sounds like a few of you have went through the floor to run wiring.

Us this the generally accepted method for running new wire?

No idea. It was really the only way I could run 4 gauge wire. The 45 amps of converter output, and length of wire run dictated 4 gauge.

Any special measures to protect wire under the trailer? Conduit, padded clamps, that sort of thing. Or does the wire hold up pretty well underneath?

I used plastic accordion wrap over the wires and padded clamps, trying to tuck the wire up high so it is protected by the frame in case it is dragged in a low ground clearance situation.

I used plastic clamps, and put hose over it anywhere it might rub on the edge of metal.

The 4 gauge cable I used was marine rated so I didn't worry too much about it being exposed.

We follow the DOT trailer wiring standard for sizing conductors and enclose multi single conductors and cables in split wire loom or in blue tube conduit.

All floor penetration s are in pvc to blue tube compatible boxes or end fittings or run in the trailer frame when possible. All tubing is fastened every 18" using metal straps.

Only metal tie wraps are used if used at all. Terminations are onto insulated ring terminals to a screw or suitable capture terminals never open wire ends under screws.

We crimp all connections and use die lectric grease on all finished terminations and in the rear of all crimped wire ends.

We solder wire connections and certain terminals dePending on situation.

Please check out this approach on our site www.flyingtigertransport.com hope this is helpful. The attachment shows what can happen to plastic inline connectors under stress.

I agree with Thomas : Accordion wrap protects the conductors plus does not trap moisture or road salt like other raceway systems .Moisture is not a large enemy to most types of wire insulation , but UV , heat and physical damage are .

plastic inline burnout

Thought this got attached yesterday, sorry. This was carrying the full neutral/negative circuit to the converter- and not well.

IM(not so)HO: Scotch-Loc connectors are the tell-tale sign of cheesy work.

I am amazed to open up all different brands of campers and motorhomes and find these things in place. To some builders it's only important that stuff works when delivered.
