Gel battery

Will the converter in my Scamp 13 (2004). Work with a gel battery?

You need to research your individual Converter/charger. look up the brand and model #'s. When putting out a fair amount of money for quality batteries the last thing you want to do is cook them in a short amount of time. You're much better off with a charger that has smart charger technology.

It will work, but it may not be the best decision or combination.
What converter do you have in your Scamp and what accessories?

My 2004 came with a simple "American" 20Amp Converter which works well but does not have "Smart Charger" technology.

For best results and longevity on a Gel battery, a Converter with Smart technology and or a Charge Wizard device would be best to charge and protect a Gel battery.

I'm sure someone will offer a better or more complete response.

Are you sure you dont mean AGM?
AGM would be my choice before gel.

And AGM is about the same as the regular wet lead acid battery so it is almost certain that the converter will (for all practical purposes) do just a good job on the AGM as a regular lead acid. But how good that will be depends on the converter model.

Battery

Thanks for the info from both of you. I did mean gel battery. I have Renogy solar. I have Renogy 100 amp hour gel battery. Perhaps I should just switch off the converter when plugged into "shore power". Until I've researched a smart charger converter that will work with my system. Thanks for your thoughts and time.

or perhaps a battery disconnect switch. you'd be able to connect the battery to the solar panel with no charge coming from the converter. all the usual 12v stuff would still consume shore power (converted to 12v). that cut off switch is a handy thing to have all the time.

If you switch off the converter while plugged in, you'll always be using the battery for all your 12V needs. The American converter in our 2006 Scamp has an output of 13.4V, usually 13.2 at the battery terminal. That's well below what would damage a GEL cell. You probably get more than that from your tow vehicle connection. Check your actual voltages with a meter and then ask Renogy.
