I have a converter, and I have replaced a bad converter with a new converter. All that being said - if I was redoing - I vote for keeping the AC / DC separate, and using a charger only. Put the outlet that the charger plugs into on a switch. Done. Simple. Does everything a converter does (assuming you have a battery installed).

Thanks for all the info guys -- I'm leaning towards just doing the charger at this point. Since so little on our Scamp runs on 120 anyway, it doesn't really matter much if we have that. I'm pretty comfortable working with electricity -- I've helped my dad rewire a couple of houses and wire some new construction -- but I wasn't sure in this specific situation how things "ought" to be done. But keeping things separate makes a lot of sense, and ... Like I said, my goal is to basically have everything running off of 12v anyway.
