Plumbing traps?

While at Bolerama, I seen a plumbing trap that looked like this:




It is made by Camco and is called a "Drum trap" or "Camper Drain trap". Does anybody know anything about these? Are they an effective trap. They sure look a lot more compact than your standard P-trap.

This is all the Camco website says:
"Camper drain trap is designed especially for campers and RVs. Made of durable, chemical resistant polypropylene; won’t rust. Barbed for 3/4" ID hose."

I'm considering installing one of these in sink, using a Y valve further down the line to divert water to either the outside hose or small gray tank I am considering installing. Any comments / suggestions?

Our 5th wheel sink has exactly that same trap. No complaints.

Same in my ole Scamp too. I've only known one problem that's occured with this trap and would happen with just about any kind.

At the second Oregon Gathering a woman was doing her dishes, the glue in the trap had "dissolved" and the trap came apart (it's in two pieces), she didn't know it until her feet started getting wet. Because the cabinet door was closed.... there was a volume of water all over the inside of the cabinet area. Made quite a wet mess. And because we were camping, she wasn't exactly setup to dry it.. We opened the cabinet and took everything out, wiped it down as best we could then turned on a couple of fans aiming right at the cabinet. (More than one reason to carry a smallish clip-on fan!). I know she will had work to do when she got home... like replace the trap and continue to dry the trailer out.

We have that type of trap on our Scamp 16 shower pan.

I just replaced it as the old one was cracked and leaked. Also when I took out the drain part, inside the shower, the metal just crumbled and the whole thing fell out onto the ground. I replaced the trap with the type you show in the picture. For the inside part an all stainless steel 'Bar Sink Drain" complete with strainer basket, from my local hardware store (about $6) fit just fine. Mine has a hose connection to the gray water tank. No reason a y valve wouldn't work.
