Questions about Hot Water Tank

I'm planning on taking my 98 Burro out for the first time this year on Wednesday. So I'm getting it all set up.

I have a question about the hot water tank... I'm brand new to trailers with plumbing and so I'm wondering, is there a separate tank that fills up that gets heated for the hot water? How does this fill up? Can I see it (I looked, not sure where it is), and see how much water is in it? I am not sure how much it holds, either.

Thanks!

Yes- There is a seperate hot water tank
No - There is no level Guage to visually see the level in the tank.
Most RV water heaters have a capacity of 6 gallons
The water heater is filled from your on board water tank or from the campground water supply if hooked up .
The water heater is just a minature version of your homes water heater.
The system is no more complicated than the hot water system in you residence

Nor a fresh water tank, nor a gray water tank or any combination thereof. Look under the benches in the dinette.

It does.. has grey and black... since I had to replace them last fall. When I bought it they were somehow gone, which was weird. I bought it from a good friend so I trust her. Also has fresh as I just filled it.

And I played around with the water heater last fall, got it running, to make sure I knew how.

Good Cynthia, do you have a manual for the hot water heater? If not, have you checked the Document Center? http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/downloads.php

So you just need to be sure the hot water tank is full before lighting it, or turning it on if electric. We have not used our fresh water tank as we have always been connected to campground water. After connecting the water hose I open the hot water faucet to bleed out the air and allow the tank to fill. I have "heard" ( can't verify) that if the water level is low in the hot water tank and it gets too hot it will destroy the high temp sensor and it is not replaceable. I converted our hot water tank to electric, can still use gas too

I don't, and I haven't, thanks! I'll do that.

Okay thanks for the information! I believe the hot water tank is only propane heated, not electric. That'd be nice if it were electric too. I'll have to look into that.

Our water heater is propane only. We turn it on for about a half hour in the morning and then turn it on again to do the evening dishes. Also turn it on prior to taking a shower. Water stays hot/warm.
If you connect to city water and then open the relief valve ( pix ) and let water flow for a few minutes, you will ensure that the tank is full.
Your heater may vary from the pics, but valve is top centre in pix. You can see water coming out in second picture.

Ah excellent thank you! That does look just like mine. I am planning on using the hot water for showers a few times in the next couple of weeks. How long does it take for the water to heat up?

I have one like Glenn's, depending on how cold the water is going into the tank it can take 15 to 30 minutes to be hot enough for a shower. Less time for doing dishes or washing hands.

Great, that doesn't seem like very long.

And... The tank will refill itself after I use some of the hot water? Had a nice shower this morning!

Questions about Hot Water Tank

When you draw hot water, cold water replaces it. So yes, it automatically refills. But of course it will take a while for the "replacement" water to be heated.

Ok that's what I thought. I really wish I had meters to tell me how much water is in each tank. I swear I'm not using much fresh water but I seem to be running out very quickly. And I'm only using enough to brush my teeth and do a super quick shower.

Don't know where your water tank is located but can you see it at all? My SD17 has an outside hatch that I can open to see the tanks water level. I had a cabover camper many years ago that had the tank behind a paneled cabinet. I cut a 1" x 12" view slot in the paneling to see the water level.

We really used a lot less water when I added this water saving device on the kitchen faucet, even though we thought we were being very careful.
