These look a lot better than the earlier ones for sale.

Did anyone here get to see these?

Greg A 03-30-2009 06:29 PM

No bath in the first one. Second one has the room, but can't tell if it has a shower or toilet.

The brain is thinking.... I love my 72 Boler American - but having a 16 footer would be pretty nice.... That whole 140lb Great Dane and 2 adults can get a bit cramped...

Tim - that is why I switched to my 16' Scamp from the 13'. Two adults and a dog was too cramped in the 13'. Also, the amount of storage and counter space in the 16' feels luxurious in comparison.

I was trying to get a sense of what the previous lots sold for and have not been successful.

At the surplus web site there is a link for "Past Bid Results", but there is no listing for FSC 2330.

Does anyone here know what the previous auction results were, and just how truly trashed the trailers were? Obviously the "soft tissue" stuff, like cushions, curtains, and fragile brackets and rods are probably goners. Also, the "loose stuff" like the spare tire, propane bottle, and so on are missing. I'm more concerned with the structure -- are the frames and shell typically OK or not?

Clearly I would have to make an inspection before bidding, but it's a 3 hour drive each way, so the question is whether it's even worthwhile considering making the drive.

Thanks for any information!

BTW, did any of you notice that they state "Approximate Dim.: 12' x 4' x 10' (L xW xH)"? I sure hope they didn't crush it down to 4 feet wide!

One sold for $1000.
Another for $750.00

Most of these have gone for $950-1500 range.

I estimate to do them with quality materials and fix them up with what would be needed you're looking at a $3000-5000+ additional investment. Assume that everything has to be replaced and then if you salvage anything, great. If you add the acquisition cost that would give you 5000+ to take to the market to shop for a 16 and there have been too many great 16's lately in that range to buy without all the rehab. So in terms of a "deal" I personally don't think these are it. In addition they have been stored in an Coastal environment so there will be lots of rust to deal with.

Now if you're in it for the love of rehabbing and don't care about the "deal" or cost factor, these are certainly excellent blank slate type rehabs to investigate. Just my evaluation, but hope this helps give you some guidance.

Thanks Kevin!
Thanks Greg!

3 hours each way - - sounds like a nice Saturday to go and check them out... I'm looking at 1970 miles 1 way - - so it's a bit more difficult for me.

I think the 4k - 5k worth of fixing to make it perfect is a bit much.... what's great about these, is no matter where you start - weather that's with the $750 camper - or the $7500 camper - everyone has things that's important to them. For me, I bought what I could afford at the time - (what the finance/wife allowed).... and I now am completely happy with what I have.... I paid under $750 - and have another $400 into it?? Am I done with the remodels? No - not at all, but I know one thing - the time I've had with it - - even under construction has been well worth it.... and if I was looking for that perfect camper, I would still be sleeping in a tent.

So my advice, is if you are that close, drive down to check it out. And for the low $$ to get into something like this, go for it - if you find that the remodel is a bit much for you.... post it again on a site like this, and I'm sure as the Spring time comes - - people will be looking for eggs again....

Best of luck with your decision.

Tim

It turned out I had to go down to a place near there the other day and learned that the purported 3.5 hr drive is only if you travel between 1am and 4:30am -- it took me a little over 6 hours each way. So one is faced with the choice of arriving at the base well before viewing hours and figuring out what to do for amusement when everything is closed, or staring at bumpers for the whole trip.

I didn't get a chance to stop in because I was with a carful of people who had to get there and back ASAP.

Now I see that even though there's nearly a day before the auction closes the bids have heated up quite a bit -- the one without the closet is bid at $1,338.99 and the one with the closet is bid at $1,160.00.
