Prepaid mobile broadband?
Searching for an mobile internet provider, I was looking at a lot of different plans with either one or two year contracts. Then I happened upon some companies that offer prepaid plans with no contracts. Modems are $50 to $80 but after that you just buy service as you need it. This seems like it would be perfect for those of us that like to travel with our eggs but aren't quite ready to become fulltimers. Here's a comparison site:

2010 Prepaid Mobile Broadband Comparison

Has anybody tried this and are you happy with the results?

I used the Virgin plan this spring en-route to Canada from Florida. I only had a chance to use it for my last 10 days in the US going up I-75 corridor, and it worked well. I shall use it this coming January for our three "snowbird" months in Florida's cheap, contract-free, and gives reasonable speed & coverage. I'll likely spend about $90 for the season, for email & park reservations, etc.
