Solar Install
 
Just completing my solar install and I've been searching for a decent wiring diagram for my system. My question is where am I installing inline fuses or circuit breakers, I have bought 2 inline auto reset 20amp beakers, so far. My system consists of the panel, controller, batteries and inverter. Also with my panel providing 5amps is 20amp breaker too much?

I would also install a fuse panel for the 12 volt stuff if you don't have one.

Breakers should be sized to protect the wiring from overheating. If I recall correctly, 20 amps is right for a 12 gauge or larger wire.

So locations of fuses, correct me if I'm wrong. One between panel and controller, one between controller and batteries, and a fuse panel for my lights, fridge, appliances etc. No fuse between the batteries and the inverter.

You should have a fuse (breaker) between the battery and any wires that lead from it. Same for the converter. Think what would happen if any given wire was dead shorted - for instance, if the wire between the battery and converter was shorted, you need a breaker to protect that wire.

I've assuming that you mean converter (110 volt AC to 12 volt DC device) as opposed to an inverter (12 volt DC to 110 volt AC device). In any case, all wires must be protected with a breaker appropriate for the wire gauge.

No I mean inverter dc to ac. I have a 1000watt inverter with 4gauge cables to the battery. I have to find a fuse for that?

If the cables get shorted out, the battery will attempt to melt the 4 gauge cable. I'd fuse it just to be on the safe side.

There are lots of inexpensive high amp fuses available from the automobile boom box trade. Examples:

I have the ANL fuseholders on a 1/0 lead to the inverter and a 6awg lead to the converter and DC distribution. They are bulky and the plastic lids aren't very reliable (mine are tie-wrapped to secure) but they're also sturdy. I wouldn't say the fuses are inexpensive but the amperage rating for "catastrophic failure" should be high enuf to make them a one-time proposition.

The third link in my post is a circuit breaker for $8. Might be a good alternative.
