I did the same think Bob did with my 1974 Boler. I pained with Interlux Briteside Polyurethane Marine coatings and got fantastic results. It's easy to apply and very reasonably priced.

I would repair with fiberglass. It's not hard to work with and is very forgiving if you make a mistake. I have never done any type of fiberglassing until I bought my 1974 Boler just over a year ago....
