The pin definitely has to be precisely aligned in the hole. I have also tried to tap the pin up, to remove it entirely, but was unable to move it.
My thought is that possibly the hinge was heated...

The problem I have is the pin of the door hinge has, through the years, moved up, out of the lower hinge socket, and no longer engaged in the lower part of the hinge. The door won't hang correctly...
