My daughter is asking for a recipe that i used when we went camping for Thanksgiving 2008. I have no clue where it is, but i assume i had gotten it from here.
I had precooked ground turkey instead of the ground beef in the recipe. She tells me that i did not use a can of sloppy joe sauce. I can't remember what i used for sauce, but that seemed like a good answer. I filled zipper sandwich bags, heated the bags in hot water and poured onto buns.
That was the year i tried the breakfast in a dollar store zipper bag, (i gave that report back in 2006!) but for this i was only reheating and it worked out fine.
thanks jean

OR it might have been a pie iron recipe - rather that a bun and zipper bags - as i was trying to be more creative at camping that year. -
of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the most.

Jean, see if any of these recipes might be what you're looking for. I couldn't find anything that was specifically called "sloppy joe," it's possible that recipe was lost in the HACK. Of course, in the search your original request popped up and so did a couple of non-food related topics

Here's a simple recipe for sloppy joes. My mother always made this with ground beef but I have used all or part ground turkey breast and love it just the same.

3 pounds ground meat (browned)
14 ounce bottle ketchup
14 ounces water
1 Tablespoon mustard (I like to use a brown or spicy mustard)
1 Tablespoon vinegar
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
half package of dried spagetti sauce mix (like Lowry's or McCormick's)

Once the meat is browned and drained you just add all the other ingredients and let it simmer. I have made this stove top and in a crock pot. I like to freeze the leftovers in cooking bags to make reheating easy.

My mother didn't onions so she never added any but I often serve cut up onion with this.

Enjoy
Kathy

thanks all.
Kathy- your mother's recipe sounds like my kind of cooking. Our daughter did actually use a can of sloppy joe mix and hamburger in the pie irons and they were happy.
our other daughter doesn't like onions either - so i sneak in onion powder when she's not looking. - she will never know why her mashed potatoes will not taste like mine.
Donna i couldn't get the link to work. interesting concept though.
thanks jean
