Canoe with a Scamp 5er?

Hi folks, my wife and I finally had the chance to see a Scamp 5th wheel. Big thanks to the lovely couple who welcomed us, gave us lunch, and showed us everything the scamp had to offer - even letting me back the trailer up to see how it reversed. But I have two questions:

#1 - Does anyone ever bring a canoe with them? If so, how do you carry the canoe with the fifth wheel?

#2 - Does anyone with a Scamp ever have problems with water getting through the rivet holes?

I sold the canoe and got kayaks. No problems with leaks. I can ge three kayaks and two bikes inside.



Somebody has mounted a rack to the top of the scamp. I don't remember if it was for canoes or kayaks.

Keep in mind that if you put the canoe on top of the Scamp, you have to tow the trailer to the put-in, or you have to move the boat from the scamp to the tow when you get to camp.

We settled for a Sea Eagle SE-370 inflatable kayak. If you could put a rack on top of the Scamp, you'd need ladders to get a canoe off and on.

We've never had a leak, at a rivet or anywhere else.

So I spent some time looking last night and it seems the most common method is to mount a receiver to the front of the truck and mount a rack to the cab or directly on the back of the cab (think BackRack). This allows the canoe to be loaded directly without using an 8' step ladder. I thought the canoe mounted to the scamp was neat, but I think I might have a hard time loading it, even with a ladder as I'm not that tall. Anyone else tried the front receiver method or a different type of boat? I had thought of a zodiac, but I'd have to get an outboard for it. Ideas anyone?

I would also like to be able to carry either a canoe or two kayaks on my Tacoma while towing the Scamp 5th w. I would prefer to have a rack that hooks to the frame under the front bumper, there seem to be a couple of hard points for accessories, probably intended for a snow plow. My canoe is 16' royalex Old Town, too heavy to carry on the roof of the Scamp which already has the heavy AC on it. And to lift it up there? No way!

Somebody here built a canoe rack on top of his Scamp 5th, but the pictures show what I think is a Kevlar canoe, probably about half the weight of mine.

If you use a van or SUV for a TV, a rack on top of that is independent of the camper behind. Of course this doesn't work very well for you guys that like 5th wheelers.

I agree that putting anything as large as even the smallest lightest boats on top of any FGRV. (inconvenience aside) would put a strain on the shell of the Egg and a change in aerodynamics that seem undesirable to me. Just sayin'...

Don't know Scamp windows, but I once considered changing out the sliding rear window of my rig for a bigger escape-style window that I could open up and slide an Old Town canoe down the center.....then just secure it inside.

Here is a 16' canoe on top of a Nissan Frontier double cab. It will give you an idea of the spacing. I think the upturned ends will be an issue even if you move the canoe forward. Kayaks are shorter and don't have the upturn. They might work. Good luck, Raz
