F-150 Short bed (5.5 ft) with Scamp 19

Is anyone pulling a scamp 19 with a 5.5ft short bed F-150?

If so does the geometry work out or will the camper hit the back of the truck when turning ?

Thanks!

Probably would if you were backing and got it turned short enough. Get one of these installed and add 3 1/2 feet to the tongue:

It would accomplish four things: 1. Eliminate the possibility of cornering into your tow vehicle 2. Eliminate trailer sway for more stable towing without equalizer or sway bars 3. Allow the tailgate to be let down to access the bed of the truck 4. Make the trailer easier to back

FYI Bruce
Scamp 19 is a 5th wheel, not a bumper pull trailer.

just measured bed (haha)

Ok, so...
I have a 5 and a half foot bed. I thought I would need to put the 5th wheel hitch an inch or two behind the axel. As it turned out, my hitch is correctly installed over the axel.

I have no issues driving turning or backing. On a tight turn (very unusual) I have to watch out for the scamp hitting the cab. This gets close on backing in tight situations.

My 1988 5th wheel needed a new axel a few years ago, when I replaced it, I had the shop raise the scamp an extra few inches. To make up for the new vehicle bed height.

Hope this helps...
Also, fun project, I had the shop extend back bumper and add diamond screen.
For more storage space and NEW rear stabilizing supports.

I have a supercab f150 with a 6.5' bed. The mount is really far back in the bed and the shorter bed should not be a problem. Here is a picture if my link works:

Here is drawing I did based on a tracing of a photograph - just imagine the cab being 1 foot farther back. There is plenty of room.

We have a Toyota double cab with the short (60") bed and the hitch ball is maybe an inch behind the rear axle. No problems with contact between the cab and trailer nose or the landing legs frame and bumper even with the truck at a right angle to the trailer.

Edit to add - Hitch ball center is 24" from the back wall of the cab.

With my Nissan, I mounted the ball in the center of the bed, thirty inches from the back of the cab. The ball was about 2” behind the axle. The Scamp pulled wonderfully.

I believe Scamp says to mount the hitch no further forward than 60 inches from the corner of the bumper to allow for clearance when turning.

Thanks!
For you and all F 150 owners check on a recall. Many thousands of them have been recalled due to a fire hazard. This is just a FYI since so many drive and pull their trailers with a F 150.

The recent recall is for a cable problem to engine block heaters.
