Awning handle mount problem on Scamp

I have a Scamp 13 with the Fiamma awning factory installed. I am wondering if anyone has installed the 2 brackets that hold the awning crank handle in place inside your Scamp. Reason I ask is that, I noticed that the brackets fit extremely tight to the handle when snapped in place.

Before I installed the brackets I attached one to the handle to check the fit and removal. I found that I could not remove the bracket unless I used a small flat blade screwdriver to force the bracket off the handle. My concern is that trying to remove the mounted handle would rip the brackets off the wall. Has anyone else found this to be a possible problem?

I used a socket bigger than the recess (from a wrench set) and a hammer to do a slight "percussion adjustment" to widen the groove a tad.

What size socket did you use, and did the brackets stay to the adjustment?


Was this a Fiamma type device you were working with?

This was in 2006 so I don't recall the size. It was a Fiamma on my new 17LD Casita; don't recall it being an issue thereafter. Then they were a stamped steel part, so no springback involved.Don't know if Fiamma still uses that or an extrusion these days.

The new units are made of a heavy plastic material and I would think that approach is not possible, they might break in two.

Yup. Don't know Scamp layouts, but you might consider a PVC pipe to stick parts into; then a velcro strap to tie back the long ends. Wound up doing that in my Casita closet as I needed the old spot to relocate my fire extinguisher.

Might try using a heat gun or hair dryer to heat it up some to spread it a bit.

Those plastic brackets are pretty substantial. We've had them in use for over 10 years with zero problem. I can imagine that an unmounted bracket would be extremely hard to remove by hand. It takes a lot of force to remove the handle from a mounted bracket and it will bow the handle along its length somewhat before it pops out. But, it won't hurt the handle and it won't break the bracket. Now, as far as ripping the bracket off the wall, that would be dependent on your mounting hardware. They should be screwed into the fiberglass.

My Scamp is a little different as it has two twin beds installed.
I put the clamps for the rafter and handle along the side of the left bed and if the clips as closer together and more of the handle is sticking out I can grab it and easily pull that side free and then the other end.
Leave yourself some room for a grip and leverage and you should be good to go.

I went to Home Depot and got a couple of brackets for brooms... worked great
I’d attach pictures but we have since sold the trailer

We just hang the pole from the top of the bulkhead, just to the left of the bathroom door and to the right of the stove. There is a little lip on the divider that holds the pole in place. It has never fallen down, despite some rough roads.

We replaced our original '95 awning with a Fiamma in December of '17. The original awning pole was attached to the door frame behind the bi-fold door. I replaced the single bracket with both brackets from the new awning. Like others have stated it was moderately difficult to remove the new pole for a while, but with time it has gotten easier.
