Late thought, Bill...

Theft of the whole trailer is my biggest concern, both at home and on the road. In addition to the hitch padlock (which is mostly to prevent a bored teenager from unlatching the coupler in a parking lot), I also carry and use a coupler lock (the kind that inserts where the ball goes) whenever the trailer is unhitched.

Nothing will stop a determined thief, but my goal is to convince him to look for a softer target.

Looks expensive. What if somebody stole it?

A little pricey

$75 is a little pricey. Have to think about that...

$75 enables not having repair aging door locks, duplicating keys that have discontinued blanks, or every having to carry a key when out of the trailer. The lock is infinitely more secure than the original door latch and the code can be changed in about 5 minutes.
You still need a working passage latch, but it's the locking mechanism that's the most troublesome.

This is what we use as well, for the same reasons. Won't stop a determined thief, but might make us less of a target. We also leave zero valuables in the camper, preferring instead the safety of taking them with us in the TV when we head out for the day.

They work just fine.

There are lots of scenes like this along the Gulf Coast, as well. Developers buy up every square inch they can find on which to build high-rise luxury condominiums, continually encroaching on and eventually crowding out everything else in their way, including camp grounds. Watch what happens when a hurricane ravishes a section of the gulf coast - destroying homes, restaurants, mom-and-pop stores, camp grounds, etc., that have been there for generations. The big money investors/developers roll in, and in the blink of an eye, there will be yet another high-rise condo there. Sorry I got on a soapbox. But over the past 30 years, I've just seen way too many quaint coastal communities along the Gulf turned into vacation playgrounds for jet-set tourists. I admire those individuals who refuse the big money offers to hang onto their own little piece of paradise, but then they rise one morning to look out the window and see towering cranes erecting yet another high-rise where their next-door-neighbors used to live. Oops! I guess I hopped back on that soapbox again....

Our local Home Depot (and I assume all HD's) also uses wheel boots on all of their rental equipment trailers. When I asked a guy at the rental desk how well they worked, he said they had never had a trailer stolen - yet. They had a couple pieces of equipment stolen off of wheel-booted trailers, but the trailers themselves weren't stolen. I don't recall what brand their wheel boots were, but he said they were relatively inexpensive.
