2014 16' Scamp Data

Well, last winter after years of cranking the top up and cranking the top down, I sold the old Coleman pop-up, ordered a new 2014 16' Scamp layout 4 and became part of the fiberglass rv crowd. I picked it up in Backus MN during the first week of April and have been out playing for most of a season. The timing was perfect and I have absolutely no regrets.

My following posts will contain some measurements and data I have collected on my Scamp with the hope that it will be of interest to others (and so I can track things as my Scamp ages).

Oh and of course a picture (White River campground, Mt. Rainier).

2014 Scamp 16' Tow Vehicle Data

2004 Honda Odyssey w/tow package
Reese 21347 8" rise ball hitch (top of ball @ 21") and StowAway Hitch Tightener
Mileage summary (55-65 mph approx. 8000 miles, averages by total miles and gallons not fill-ups):
Highway no trailer 26.1 mpg
Mixed, more highway no trailer 23.4 mpg
Pulling trailer-highway 15.7 mpg
Trailer towing max 20.2 mpg (> 2/3 tank)
Trailer towing min 13.1 mpg (>2/3 tank)
(Towing a 12' Coleman pop-up trailer of identical weight I would see around 18 mpg so wind resistance matters)
Anti-sway bar added near end of season

2014 Scamp 16' Required Modifications

Trailer comes with electric brakes but does not come with a safety break-away switch. Apparently Minnesota doesn't require this switch but Washington State does.

Sloppy ac wiring required rework to eliminate ground fault (GFI) receptacle trips when trailer was plugged into 120 ac (ac neutral and protective ground in contact with one another)

Jim, How many miles do you have on your 2004 Odyssey?

We are towing a Scamp 16 similar to yours with a 2014 Odyssey. Our Scamp is close to 2600 pounds including a 200 pound tongue weight fully loaded for the road. (We only have one propane tank.)

We do get better mileage, probably because 2004 was the last year before variable cylinder management.

Jallen:

All measurements are very similar to our '07, SD 16'er with the exception that ours weighed 2,580 lbs (loaded, ready for a trip) with a tongue weight of 265 lbs. We've also never needed a sway bar, though I'm very careful to keep the load balanced (not too far back). We pull ours with an '03, Chysler Town & Country, 3.8L, AWD. We get 22 - 25 mpg w/o the trailer, 15 - 18 mpg with the trailer, depending. Our trailer has been to 47 states, 5 Canadian Provinces. Maybe 30,000+ miles on it.

Jim I have one question if you could. How tall is the trailer with the AC on the roof. They are using a new AC since our 2013 was built which looks taller.

Ken, I'll jump in here and say they've came away from the trusty ole Coleman and gone to a Dometic. It IS taller as I compared them at the Piney Scamp camp. They say the Dometic is lighter..... I still am partial to my Polar Cub.

I bought the Odyssey new and it has a little over 94,000 miles now. This is low for its age but we use it more for trips and out of town travel and use another smaller vehicle as an everyday driver.

The results with your new rig are exciting. If anything ever happened to mine I'm sure I would just go after another Odyssey.

My brother has a Toyota Sienna mini van a year older than mine. A problem with the Toyota is the factory receiver hitch frame sits low below the back bumper and often drags even when not loaded. He has to actually take it off when he isn't doing a lot of towing.

Ken-
It is a Dometic and it looks tall. I was told the lighter weight story too. I should be able to get the overall height when I have it in the shop this weekend.

I rarely have electric hook ups and haven't been in a situation hot enough to need it so would like to figure a way to remove it for several trips (Northwest US, Western Canada) and then put it back on when I start exploring to the South. Has anyone tried this?

Jim I would really like that overall height when you can. As far as removing and re installing that seems like a lot of work. Just forget its there.

Another one curious on the new height. Jallen does your fresh water tank sit right on the wood? Other owners have complained condensation gets the wood wet. Thanks.

Trailer / Dometic AC height

The AC is a Dometic B57915.71 13,500 BTU. It projects 13-3/4" above the top of the roof. With tires at normal pressure and hitch (top of ball )at 20-1/2" the highest point on the AC is a little under 8' 6" (8' 5-1/2" right side, 8' 5-5/8" left side).

The fresh water tank sits directly on painted OSB. I have not noticed any condensation problems but I've always had it in pretty dry climates. This is something I will watch for from now on.

It looks like it would be difficult to get any waterproof layer between the tank and the OSB as the tank is held down with straps that were installed before the bench seat was put in. You can't reach all of the fasteners.
