Wheel bearings - Parkliner

I removed the wheels last year, put the egg up on jack stands and plastic bags over the drum/hubs. Egg was covered with our Sunbrella cover for the light winter we had, and parked under our new carport.

After cleaning all the bearings, inspecting all bearing surfaces, and cleaning the brake drums, everything looked fine, so I lubed the bearings with Lucas Red n Tacky, and today the hubs went back on. All I needed were a couple new seals and a couple new tang washers. The egg is still on jack stands, but wheels and tires will soon go on.

We're off tomorrow on a big silver bird for a week in Aruba. Can't RV everywhere. First registered camping trip is for Three Valley Campground in western NY in late July, but who knows what might come up?

Good for you. Mine need doing as well but it's in the mid thirties with a nice breeze. Even the robins are shivering. Hope to get it next week. Raz

Mid 40's with a breeze here when I did mine, but I wanted them done just in case a quick trip comes up when we get back. Good luck with yours!

Frank and RAz, it's in the mid 70's here. We are looking forward to attending the Niagra Wine Taste gathering in September, and was wondering if you'll be attending.

Frank, that's great. We've never been to Niagara Falls, and are looking forward to seeing it, meeting other fiberglassrv members, and maybe do some leaf peeping on our way down the coast before returning to Arizona.

What are your thoughts about having the camper wheels balanced?

My question is....You're not going to take the trailer out for a TEST-PULL first and make sure all is well? Hub Temps? Brakes etc?? I personally could not do that. But to each his own.

If you're talking to me Darral, no worries. I've been greasing hubs and adjusting drum brakes for decades. This isn't my 1st pony show.

Each drum is marked, bearings go back in the same drums, & EZLube axles make it easy to do. Its first trip will be to my buddy's garage a week from Wednesday to get the wheels balanced again.

Not everyone is confident doing their own wheel bearing and brake work. I am, and I am meticulous about it.

Yesterday morning we had temps in the single digits (6 Deg F)
if you can trust the NWS . The thermometer on the front of our cabin was hovering at about zero degrees F. Thirty one for a high tomorrow. Soon enough it will be Spring and temps will be in the 50's .

Since I've never even changed a tire in my ~40+ years of driving I took Parkliner #35 to my local Les Schwab tire center at the two year mark. The shop mechanic stated the bearings were in great shape but stated if replaced and repacked the rig shouldn't need any service for another two years...so I took his advice. A few bucks later and we were on our way home.

Two years is generally the interval I use Thom. Used to be when we traveled I used the hand-on-a-hub test. Now I have one of those fancy Star Wars-like digital temp readers, works great, plus saves my back. All the many decades I've been hauling trailers of one kind or another, never a problem.

I tore my hot rod apart recently for a rebuild - homebuilt frame, brackets, wired, plumbed by yours truly, drove thousands of miles over 11 years, never trailered. I have had a love affair with mechanical things since a wee teen.

Different folks, different strokes Pat. I also jack up my trailer and pull the wheels every fall to save continual load on the bearings in one position for months on end, but then I am somewhat compulsive.

You should be fine for this season, but it's hard for me to say without looking!

Any other questions, email me.

Enjoy your day!

Thanks to all for this discussion. In January I purchased a 2013 Parkliner from the original owner and had question about how often to service and or replace the wheel bearings. Thanks again!
