'84 13' UHAUL build thread

This will be where I keep my work chronicled. My plans are pretty simple-
Make everything work like I want.
Fix what is rotten.
That's it.
I like pictures ! Btw- not a Scamp!

This ac will go in favor of a tongue mounted one.

All the decals/stripes will go. I'm thinking of just cleaning the fiberglass and putting floor wax on it.

You can get original stickers or customized ones from Pat Varela if you wish, although I guess you might know that. We went with original for our VT, but made the black parts blue to match our furniture.

Thanks, Cindi. Yeah, I have heard about him. I don't think I'm going to go that way, though. Haven't made up my mind.

I havent forgotten about this thread. For some reason, I cant post pics from my tablet so updating will be choppy. I need a card reader to put the pics on a computer, then on this site.
I'll try again because sometimes it works but I never know when it will.

When I have to deal with that problem, I either link my iPad to my laptop by a patch cord or simply e-mail the picture to myself on my computer. Sounds silly but it works!

One piece cut to fit. I'll have to have two layers to build up to even with the outside.

Here's the first layer. You gotta grind all the gelcoated off so you have clean fiberglass (if there is such an animal). I wiped down with acetone. Use mat not cloth! I screwed it in couple of places and clamped the rest.

I meant to say use mat cloth between the two pieces. It gives more strength.
Second layer, same as the first. I just used the clamp ring and or window frame as a template.
Second picture is the first wipe of bondo. I find the job goes much better if you pull the bondo very tight. In other words, don't try to build it up fast and have to sand it down. Pull it tight and there's very little sanding.

Second wipe of bondo. Very little sanding or touch up need (there was a little of both).

A little white primer and it looks great already.

So, now on to the back. I had to get rid of the window ac and wood plank in the back. I also want to change the rear running lightshoes so I'm doing away with the old holes. Also wanted to clean up the rear of the body so I'm taking off the center rib thingy. Here's some pics (since I figured out how to do it!).
A couple of points when doing something like this.
Where two panels meet, you should cut a pretty good "V" groove between them. This part is not for the squeamish.
Next, cut three layers of mat- starting with small and going larger.
Wet the panels with catalyzed resin.
Lay the first layer in the "V".
Pat it into the resin so there are no air pockets (you can see them easily)
Continue on adding resin and mat until all three layers are on.
Try not to have it dripping. It is messy.
Walk away for a day (in cool weather) . A couple of hours in hot weather.
I like to buy a throwaway tyvek suit, wear a respirator and goggles.
Fiberglass is not for sissies. You will be itching!

Next is grind and bondo . I haven't gotten to primer because I'm doing it outside and there were snow flurries today.

I received my back and other side window....yay! Thanks to Face Book member Arthur Hollis.
I also got to poking around (literally) and found some floor rot. Looks like I'm not done with fiberglass yet!

Thanks!
Here's as far as I'm going to cutout the floor. There's a little spot under the curbside seat.
