1972 Cloud 9 - 13'

Hi all! New to this forum. We have a 1972 Cloud 9 we stumbled on (and I'll admit, kind of impulse bought) a few years ago via a local craigslist ad. We've loved it and have used it with our two young kids for three summers of camping fun. It was redone by previous owner. Has bunks in front and dinette that turns into double bed. Fridge/sink/and added window air conditioner unit. I know this company was out of MN (where I live) and stopped making campers in the mid-70s but that's about all I know. Anyone have any good info on the campers or if there is a big market on them (we're wondering if its time for a bigger camper...)? Thanks for any info out there!

In answer to your other question, yes, there is a robust resale market for used 13' molded trailers. See the classified ads and sold archives on this site and at www.fiberglass-rv-4sale.com to get an idea of values.

The market is cooling with the weather, though, especially in northern states, so you might do better waiting until spring to sell. Use the winter to prep it for sale- take care of any maintenance issues and get it looking its best.

There are larger molded fiberglass options you might consider. Molded fiberglass trailers do have some distinct advantages over conventional travel trailers: easier towing, fewer places to leak, and strong resale value, for starters. This forum is the best resource on the web for all things related to molded fiberglass trailers if you decide to go that way.

Welcome, and best wishes!

Most 1970s campers are worth about zero. Molded FG are the exception. Its a tribute to the quality and durability that there are so many survivors out there.

Value is all about condition. I would expect value to be similar to a 1970s Scamp. There were a lot of different 13 foot trailer manufacturers back then. Bolers and Trilliums tend to bring a premium, but they all hold value well and sell for much more now than they did originally.

Fiberglass trailers tend to be shorter AND narrower than traditional RV trailers. This puts a premium on space! The next step up from your 13 footer is a 16 foot Scamp. Then you have Casita 17 footers, and then sizes above that. Don't be surprised that the prices on these trailers are high as well! (There are other choices too, Scamp and Casita just tend to be the most common).

Realize a 13 foot trailer may only have a 10 foot box, while a 16 foot is going to have a 13 foot box (30% more space). Thats a huge jump space wise.

[QUOTE=thrifty bill;721199]Most 1970s campers are worth about zero.

Here in the Northeast the old stick built campers are quite in demand and are bringing fairly high prices, some several thousand dollars. Most of them of course required extensive rebuilds. There are more vintage rallies here than fiberglass rallies, although there may be a couple fiberglass campers at those rallies. We attend a couple with our Uhaul. We belong to one vintage group, and those people go nuts over the old stickies, always looking for a deal on another. We are dedicated to fiberglass, so no interest in a stickie on our part.

Yes, once restored, they are bringing serious money here too. But in as found condition, other than Airstreams, not so much. And talk to some of the tin can trailer owners about the work it took to restore one of their trailers. Its unbelievable the time put into these projects.
