Not sure what you mean by "Clear coat". I'm guessing it's some type of protective film. I have an O2 and the outside finish is white gel coat. If you could post some pics it may give a better idea of the problem. Also if you plan to pull the frame for refinishing. I can give you some suggestions.
Hello Rob,

Sorry for the late reply. Here is a link to the picture that shows the problem. The (dirty) rain water is working it's way under the clear coat and over the gelcoat.

How did you construct the table leg (looks interesting).

We are mulling over whether to try to add a "hatch" to the rear of the trailer (similar to boat hatches), to allow access to the under bed storage, which can be difficult to access.
I thought about doing the same thing - adding an outside access hatch. I'm a little intimidated about altering the outside structure. I'd have to ensure it's weather proofed. Adding outside access does introduce a small risk with regard to theft. Instead I changed the rear bed cushion to two cushions split down the middle. This allows me to lift one cushion and place it on the other cushion out of the way while I access the lifting cover. Then I took the larger right-hand opening cover and split that into two separate opening covers - one over the hot water tank, pump and water tank and the other over the rear-most storage area. I reinforced the area under and between the two covers with a separating wall that allows me to kneel on the cover and have it securely hold my weight. Consequently, I have two smaller hatches I can kneel on and lift separately. This allows a little easier access to the one side. Hmm. Perhaps a photo would be easier...

Just found one after 2 years search !

Greetings Paul!

I really love the way you refreshed this rare egg...

Bought one yesterday, color is grey and it is in really great condition. Previous owner took great care of his well pampered baby.

For now, I will check in depth what is working or not, tires and brakes will be changed this week before I pick it up. Next step is to add a shower drain to transform it into a wet toilet, seems to be a not too complicated task.

Seller had all the original paperwork including original brochure, if interested I will send you pdf copies... And to all Bonair oxygen owners on request.

Welcome to FGRV Antonius. That's an interesting mounting for the awning.

This awning is not factory original, it was an add-on by the previous owner, I don't know yet if it works or may be replaced. I just wanted the ''egg''. An ecological ultra-light camper, no need to pull it with a monster pick-up... Well some Canadians think small is beautiful! Don't get me wrong, I can afford a 35' fifth wheel but we like it this way. An egg that will last longer than us... Cheers from Montreal!

Congratulations on your new purchase Antonius. Looks great. Hope you have many happy adventures with it.

In addition to the tires and brakes, I recommend that you look at the battery and the power converter. The original power converter (MagneTek Power Converter 6325) is an old and poor design. It killed my new battery in 1 year due to its inability to shut off once the battery is charged.

There is a direct replacement available at:
4600 series Upgrade Kits

Installation is not too complicated.

Bonair oxygen upgrades

Hi Grimjed,
Many thanks for the infos! I will certainly take a look to the power converter.... How much cost the replacement you suggest? I will also install a shower and drain (fortunately toilet has a door, not a curtain). Did you installed a shower on yours? Was it easy?
Also, I've read that I should bring it to a boat specialist to renew the Gelcoat because it seems that car wax is not recommended... Any advice?
My wife has been very inspired by the decoration in yours, if you don't mind we may copy some of your ideas...:-)
By the way, Your wood counter is truly beautiful, indeed...
Once I pick it up next friday, I can send you a PDF of the brochure and other paperwork should you need them.

Cheers from Montreal!

The Progressive Dynamics model PD4635 or model PD4645 power converters are available for less than $200 U.S.

I have not installed a shower however in this thread:
http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f55/bonair-oxygen-upgrades-67021.html

the Oxygen owner discusses what was done to convert the dry bathroom to a wet bathroom.

I have a problem with the exterior finish of my Oxygen. The clear coat is flaking off and the rain water is getting under the clear coat and aggravating the problem by pealing more clear coat. Two weeks ago I took our trailer to a marine/fiberglass restoration shop. I spoke to a fiberglass guy with 30 years experience. He was very impressed with the trailer and said, "I know why they went out of business. They built them too good!" He said the structure of the trailer is extremely sound. There's absolutely no sign of fiberglass problems. He went on to say that what we are seeing on the outside of the trailer is not gelcoat. There is a top layer of clear coat, then paint (white), then primer (muddy yellow), and then the gelcoat under the primer. Gelcoat will not retain its high gloss shine for 13 years. He sanded a small area to demonstrate all the layers. I can send a photograph if you are curious. The clear coat gives the trailer that glossy look. He said the reason the clear coat is lifting off is probably due to how they painted the trailer originally. He guessed that the paint was done on a Friday afternoon and the clear coat the following week after the paint had a chance to cure. Applying the clear coat after the paint cures will not promote a chemical bond between the layers. 13 years later, I find out what they did wrong. He went on to suggest that it's a shame to have to strip the whole trailer down to the gelcoat and repaint but he couldn't see too many other options. The clear coat will continue to peel and must be removed.

Needless to say this will be very expensive to correct, however my wife and I feel it needs to be done. I have read that some of the early models of Oxygens had some quality issues. This contributed to the eventual bankruptcy of Bonair. I think I've discovered one of the quality issues with my paint.

While restoring my trailer I found a factory sticker placed in the storage area under the front seats on the counter-top side of the trailer just to the right of the power converter. It was an old brown piece of paper that appeared to be something applied at the factory to identify the trailer during original construction. Handwritten on the paper is the number 13. Therefore, I've assumed that we have trailer number 13 off the production line.

So you may be reading this and think, that doesn't sound good. It doesn't necessarily mean that your Oxygen has the same problem. The problem may be unique to my lucky number 13. My advise is provided there is no significant surface damage to your paint and tapping on the fiberglass all over produces a solid knocking sound and not a squishy sound, I think you're best leaving the finish the way it is for as long as possible. No need to spend the extra money if it isn't required.

Part of our renovations included all new foam cushions. The original cushions for the back bed were 3" thick (I think) We upgraded this to 4" thick. The original owners suggested this as the number 1 upgrade. All other cushions we left at the original thickness. All fabric is Sunbrella. It's a nice quality fabric that should age well. We copied our interior decorating ideas from another Oxygen owner!

The counter top is a cherry butcher block that I cut using the original counter top as a template. I extended the counter top by 6 inches to the left of the sink to give us some space to place dirty dishes. (Do not under-estimate this upgrade! The extra counter space is very helpful.) I used Polymerized Tung Oil (from Lee Valley) to finish the counter. I'm happy with the results.

I have all the original brochures for the trailer. Thanks for the offer.

If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer.

Cheers from Niagara.

Thanks very much Bill. Provided you were leaving the Burro for me to keep, I wouldn't mind doing the work.

awning on oxygen

Hi Paul, How did the awning work out for you last summer?
I really want an awning. Did the application cause problems towing? Did it suffer from wind damage while driving?
It messes with the aerodynamics of the designers , but if it works?? 'nother story.
thanks

Hi Norman and Jean,

So far, we haven't installed an awning. The best we've seen is Carole Turgeon's awning on the first page of the Oxygen Awning thread. http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/a...8&d=1443973217

To me, it appears that a custom awning may be a best solution using a keder track adhered to the Oxygen using 3M VHB tape. If you look at photos of my trailer in my registry you'll see I have some white rain gutters adhered to the trailer over each window. This solves a leaking problem we have when it rains heavy. This gutter (EZE RV Gutter) is held on with 3M VHB tape. It's a fantastic product! When we repainted our trailer last year, I pealed the gutters off with zero damage to the surface underneath. But I digress... The point is that a keder track held on by 3M VHB tape looks to me like the least damaging way to add an awning without spoiling the look too much. The downsides to this are:
  1. the effort required to thread the keder on the awning through the keder track
  2. you somewhat spoil the clean look of the Oxygen by adding a track (no offense to those who have done this)
We have been looking at several awning solutions. We just can't bring ourselves to drilling holes in our Oxygen. Our goal is to find a solution that is quick and easy to put up and take down and doesn't interfere with the look or aerodynamics of the trailer.

I think we've decided to invest a fair amount of money in a "Kampa Motor Fiesta Air Pro 350 Driveway Awning". A Google search should give you an option to look at one on wwwdotcampingworlddotcodotuk. You can also do a YouTube search to see other Kampa inflatable awnings. It's expensive but it checks all the boxes. Quick to set up. No attachment points to trailer, yet keeps the weather out. It can "attach to the trailer using throw over straps or the "Kampa Limpet Suction Driveaway Kit" allows you to use suction cups to temporarily adhere a keder track to the trailer. I've measured the Oxygen and considering the curved shape that the awning needs to attach to it appears that the "Kampa Motor Fiesta Air Pro 350 Driveway Awning" is the best fit. I realize it's not the best-looking solution but it may be the most functional solution.

After watching the videos about "Kampa inflatable awnings" on YouTube I wonder why a product like this isn't available in North America. I figure the cost will be slightly more expensive than a custom made awning.

When we get one later this spring, I'll post some pictures.

I too feel frustration that all those great looking cabanas that are sold in Europe are not something that has become a standard in the USA market.

Basically why we don't have them is because we don't have as large of a market for the product. We typically have larger sizes of motorhomes and trailers in the USA versus the smaller ones in Europe and therefore don't have as much need for adding more room with the use of temporary additions.
