Thanks Benita!
Sometimes ducks are smarter than they are given credit for. As she grew, ours took over guard duty from the 3 dogs. Initially she started responding when the dogs barked at strangers if they came on our property. She would charge right over to the fence to see what was going on. Pretty soon she was the first to the fence. and then began her own ruckus and the dogs ultimately left that duty to her. I often wondered if her hearing was more acute than that of the dogs. Maybe a guard goose would be more intimidating but no one ever tested her or entered the yard when she was "on duty". The thought of confronting an irate duck appeared to be a sufficient deterrent.
The dogs recognized she was a defenseless baby when we got her and one sort of adopted her. As she grew she just became part of the family and the acceptance worked both ways.

Your post prompted interesting memories,
Kurt & Ann K.

Lillian was our duck. She ruled the yard (in suburban So Cal). I had a 15 pound cat who was one great hunter, but he learned early to leave her alone. She could walk right up to his food when he was eating and he'd move away immediately. I always loved the way she walked (strut with ATTITUDE). I never did walk in the backyard barefoot, though.....
