New old scamp owners

Hi my wife and I live in St. Catharines and we purchased a 13' 1976 Scamp back at the begging of Oct. thinking if we left it till spring it would be gone. ...Little did we know how sought after these little guys are!!

My wife has wanted one for years and I'm going to be so happy not having to crank up and down and all the other set up involved with our old pop-up. Nice little unit and actually way lighter than our old pop-up camper. May have a couple minor leak issues on both end windows that I would like to take care of before our first trip. (Any quick fix suggestions??)
Can't wait for the May long weekend to suprise the rest of the family as they all think I was getting tired of towing a trailer
.....really it was just all the cranking it up when you got there, cranking it down to leave, and then cranking it back up again after the drive home to empty it out!
So far very happy with our decision!!

Congrats on the purchase. If the inside is even half as nice as the outside, you've done very well. You should plan to attend Ontario Bolerama in mid-July. It's being held at Long Beach Conservation area this year - just down the road from you!

Oh and by the way,I love the Plymouth Scamp emblems and the exhaust tips.

I can post some pics of the inside soon. The previous owners had done a coca-cola theme which looks OK but my wife and I want to change it. We just recently ordered new cushion covers direct from Scamp Trailers and had them mailed up. We put them on last weekend and they look great. I was looking at your pics. Did you repaint your fiberglass cabinets and benches?? That is the next thing we are looking at doing. Did you use melamine paint??

Our cabinet doors have been painted but the fiberglass cabinets and benches have not.They are all original.

I have a trailer much like the Scamp and Burro. The front window was recently caught by the wind and broken into several sections and ripped from its hinges. I'd very much like to get it replaced, but have had no luck finding any sources. I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Nancy, not to go to off course from the OPs topic, but if you're talking about getting a front window for a Cadet.... humm good luck. Not to discourage you, but you're not the first that's looked. In fact, I don't know of anyone that's found one except from across the pond.

Check where the edges of the window seals meet, chances are the rubber has shrunk over the years and there is a small gap between the ends. I used some kind of flexible butyl that comes in skinny ropes meant to seal windows from the hardware store. I think it was called draft stop, the key is to look for something that does not harden. It has done me well for the time I've had my trailer until I get around to replacing the seals.

Yes, check for a gap in the gasket. I've used black windshield caulk with good results. It comes in a tube available at autoparts stores. Cheap too!

To answer your question about the quick for leaking windows. IMHO, that's a bad idea, you need a permanent fix that will keep you and your belongings high and dry. You should determine where the leak is and fix it correctly. If it's the window seal, don't goop it up with a sealer of any kind, remove the window, use the correct window sealer/putty and reinstall it. If the window itself is leaking, check to be sure the "weep holes" are open. If it's simply that the window seals/rubber is worn out, buy a new window! Just thinking you'll be a lot happier in the long run if you always do repairs correctly to last a long time, advoid quick fixes unless your on the road.

I'd agree with everything you said Ron, except the gap in the gasket. Brian said the front and back windows were leaking and there aren't any weep holes in gasket mounted windows. Seems like that stuff starts pulling apart within a couple of years. Good chance there's nothing wrong with the gasket and plexiglass lasts for years and years (unless cracked), swirls and scratches can be polished out... so he may not need a new window, but needs to close the gap.... however, new gasket material and lockstrip can be purchased. Since it comes in one long piece, there's still the need to join the two ends.
