1975 Trillium 1300 home at last

My wife and I just bought a 1975 Trillium 1300 that has been sitting in a backyard under a tree for 2 years. It was quite dirty but in good shape. This is what we found when we went to look at it.

I gave a few spots some rub with my thumb and most of the dirt, mold and moss rubbed off. We had a look on the inside and it was in remarkable condition. The lady had put all new cushions in the Trillium and it was really clean. The only problem inside was the trim that joins the material together has wrinkled from heat.

We made an offer but couldn't pic the Trillium up for a week. Finally the day came to go pick up our new trailer. We have a tent trailer and camp with family who have large travel trailers.

So we ran into a few problems hooking the new trailer up to my car. The lights worked. Tires were good and we were about and hour from home.
We headed off to the local car wash to see if we could get any of this grime off.

She cleaned up real well. We headed home to get there before dark. Once home we backed the trailer into the spot which will be it's home until we store it for the winter.

Tomorrow we will start cleaning inside and out.

The next day I got up fairly early and went out to wash the trailer. I wanted to get the outside done before my wife came out to start cleaning the inside. Got a bucket of soap and water and my car wash brush.

Got up on a ladder and did the roof first. I then worked my way down and around the trailer.

I have very little to repair on my Trillium. There is some small spider cracking on the rear right corner and some on the front. Just Jelcoat stuff to fix. The frame looks in great shape too. I have to get up on top and clean around the roof vent. Here is the molding I need to fix.

A few of the spider cracking. Not sure if they will show up very well.

Well not bad for a days work so far. I have been reading the form and learning all I can but I have tons of questions and can hardly wait until we get our trailer the way we want it. We'd really like to get to one of the gatherings that are out there.

We are four season campers. We have a Snowtrekker tent that has a wood stove so camping in the snow is a pleasure. We live in Ontario so we want to head off to Algonquin Park for one test run before the snow flies.

I got the stove working tonight. Can't get the furnace going but I can get the pilot light to light as long as I hold the button it. I'll check the fridge out tomorrow, work on getting a battery hooked up. Remove the wheels and check and grease the bearings.

I'll keep posting updates to this thread as we go along

Nice find Don, sure cleaned up well. You may want to check the thermo coupler on the heater for working and location.

Thanks Dave. I'll have to read up on the heater as this is where I lack in knowledge. No sure if the fridge is a three way or not. Today I'll start investigating that stuff.

Nice find Don it is remarkable how we'll these trailers clean up I've done 4 trilliums in the last few months and they've all turned out beautiful.Next step I would do is to zep the fiberglass . As to the wrinkled trim you can try soaking it in hot water ,if that doesn't work I have a source for new trim in the windsor area not the same as the original but works very well

If you read the " not polyglow " thread you will find lots of information on the use of zep . If done properly you will find nothing better and as easy to use as zep on older fibreglass.

Don you will also see many opinions on the use of zep and the many different products to clean the trailer first I use none of them . Get a bucket of warm water and a few sheets of 600 grit wet sandpaper . You will eliminate most blemishes and scratches and will leave no residue you'll then be ready to zep and be amazed at the finish

Don sorry about all the replies but just looked at your photos and noticed a couple shots had the trailer looking all shinny probably because it is wet that is the permanent shine you will get after using zep

I will look into the Zep and try to give it a go. There are never too many replies. Keep giving me advice. I do have some background in Fiberglass. When I was in my 20's I worked for a marina building Fiberglass Sail boats. So I have a good idea what people are talking about in the repairs.

So I started to do some more to the Trillium before the rain came. I got out my buffer and used some rubbing compound to remove a lot of the marks and dirt. I then went back over it with a bucket of hot soapy water. You can see the difference in what I can't reach in the centre right now.

Attachment 77649

There are a lot of little holes in the gelcoat that need to be repaired before winter. This will stop the moisture for getting in.

The trailer is really coming up quite well. There are some little spots that need to be fixed in the fiberglass. The front has a crack with some pieces breaking away. Looks like the back corner has been hit as there is a piece broken out the size of a dime but some spider cracks. I may do all these repairs and look into getting it painted. Maybe next year some time.

I opened up the awning. It is in great conditions. I have a bag of poles but I haven't put it up yet. I washed it and it cleaned right up. The bag is rotten. I have removed it now and can take it to a guy sown the street who makes boat tops and recovers soft tops.

I also noticed the door latch. Has some cracking so I will have to be gentle closing the door until I look at this repair a little closer.

You may like many of old school folks with a marine back ground find you prefer the old school method of shining it up. As you know will not peel due to rock chips and doesnt need to be redone after a few years. Also recommend sticking to the old school method if you are any thoughts of having the trailer painted in the future.

Thanks Carol. I have no set plans yet. Painting would probably not be until after next year. It is lots of prep to get it ready. I like the look of the trailer all shinny and am reading the thread Not Poly but it is over 50 pages long. So far no mention of Zep just Red Max. I'll keep reading and tinkering. We've run out of good weather here as we have a week of rain forecasted.
