First Oliver in South Carolina?

Went to the DMV today to register my Oliver and transfer the tag from my old trailer.

Well, they were put in quite a tailspin. There was no Oliver in their system. So I had to wait an hour for them to have someone down in Columbia set it up in the database!

So I can only assume it wasn't in the tax database either. So we'll see if they can figure out a tax bill for me come December.

I guess that tells me I'm the first in South Carolina!

I didn't think that was a problem in Kansas, they just looked at my bill of sale and soaked me thru the nose. Grrrrr

We will probably have the same problem. Robert tells me our trailer, which we will pick up to trailer back to NY next week is the first sale in New York State.

Our experience was more like Stan and Carol's, just went to the DMV with bill of sale. POC, wrote a check for $177 for permanent license plate for MT. Interesting how other states deal with this.

I forget what the license was, it was the 7.5% sales tax that got my goat.

We have a cap on sales tax in SC on vehicles. So if you buy a travel trailer or a $50 million Gulfstream jet, the most you'll pay is $300.

So I had to pay $300 sales tax, $10 for new title and $15 for the tag transfer. I transferred the tag from my old trailer that I sold - it's property tax was paid in December, so I won't have another tax bill until this December. On boats and trailers in SC, they tax at 10% value and then use a millage rate by county - I expect it will be around $600 the first year.

We don't have a sales tax in MT but it surprises me other states charge sales tax for something that was not even purchased within their own state. Property I can see, but sales tax? And at 7.5% of what an Oliver cost is a substantial amount on top of the property tax. For RV's or at least travel trailers we only have a one time payment, that is a permanent license. Motorhomes are probably different, more like cars and trucks.
