Can this be possible? I have a 13ft. Scamp and a VW Beetle and think it would be great to get the two together. Is there any way a volkswagen could pull a lovebug camper or did someone just want to create a cute photo?

Such towing duos exist. First you have to determine the tow rating for your vehicle and then weigh your Scamp. Some older strip model Scamps are lighter than newer models. Do not rely on the weight stamped on your trailer. That weight was captured when the traielr was empty and before options and your gear were added. From there you can figure out what else you might have to do to make the duo work.

In addition to Benita's sensible words, I would add that towing with a new Beetle instead of an old Bug/Beetle is good too, as its tow rating is far higher - the new Beetle weighs 60% more than the old one and has 2-5 times the power.

Unhappy

I used to own a 1979 VW Beetle Convertible, and I towed a pop-up tent trailer that was built for towing behind a Harley Davidson motorcycle. I wouldn't try anything more than that or a teardrop with an original VW Beetle. The engine was rated at 47 horsepower. The owner's manual, if I remember correctly, limited towing to 900 pounds maximum.

This set-up comes to the Emily gathering. I don't know what it's like on hills and can't imagine I'd want to travel on major highways but looks good.

What CAN be done and what OUGHT to be done are sometimes two very different things. I have towed a camper trailer with a CJ-7 jeep. It has plenty of power and no wheelbase. NOT a good combo.

The original VW bugs have been used in Europe to tow camping trailers; usually the Eriba Puck which is one of the smallest and lightest upright campers ever produced.

Here's a link to another interesting European caravan site:

I don't know of many upright trailers here in the U.S. that can honestly claim to be less than 1,000 lbs dry.

During my college days I had a buddy with a Chevy Corvair pancake six powered VW. It would pull it just fine, for sure.
