Really, the whole eastern end of TN is a possibility (any of which should have some good camping options nearby, when you find out).
If you're looking for a recommendation around Franklin, I don't know of any suggestions, but there should be plenty. A few Civil War sites there, if that's your pleasure, and of course, Music City stuff.

I believe you are correct , after doing some research , Franklin Tn makes more sense . I have terrible hearing so thanks for pointing out my error.
My friend was born in Iowa and spent most of his adult life in Minnesota until he was forced to move to Florida because of his job. He is turning 70 years old and decided to retire . He has a heart condition and heat and humidity are very hard on him and he wasn't sure if he could take Minnesota's winters again so according to him he bought a home in the Smoky Mountains at about 3000 ft .
He contends that the temps and humidity up in the mountains are manageable. I spent four summers in Knoxville TN and the idea of low temps and humidity seem rather dubious.
Maybe this coming winter we can travel to Franklin and test his theory. As long as he is living in Homossass Florida, we will have to visit via phone.

3000 feet certainly sounds like Franklin, North Carolina, not the Franklin TN, and some might refer to the NC as "the Smokies."
I mostly agree with you, Steve, about the heat and humidity. I've camped in the area frequently at about 5000' and in the middle of the summer, that high there is a real benefit, but it's basically at night, when lows should consistently get below 70 (and even below 40, sometimes). But normal days might be only a little better than the surrounding lowlands.
But, Franklin NC is enough of a heat relief that it's a popular destination area for many, and there are a wide variety of camping options in the area (I've been to Standing Indian, but with a tent, and didn't pay attention to other options then).
And FWIW, I'd expect "health" as a reason for a move to the Franklin TN/Nashville area only if that meant a younger relative (esp. a medico) or a certain specialist (Vanderbilt med. school has some folk like that I think.)

My wife and I traveled through Missouri after we picked up our Casita at the factory in Texas. I will admit that Missouri is extremely hot and humid no matter where you go in the state . My wife has family in Hannibal Missouri so we had to stop but only stayed for a couple days
We are contemplating a trip to Missouri during winter when the temps moderate . We missed the Truman Library the first time through , won't on our second trip . Old Harry S is our favorite President
