Oh no! Scraped the AC off our Escape '19!!!

Gps sent us down a dark road with a low hanging tbar and it removed our fan lid and plucked the AC right off the trailer!!! Luckily it was not raining. Right now plastic is over the fan and a storage bin lid is duct taped over the hole that used to house the AC.
Waiting on a call from our nearest campingworld. (Phoenix az)

Need to live in it for two more weeks. (I have gigs in la and Las Vegas) before returning home to Oregon.

Who else has been through this?

Is campingworld Phoenix the right answer or should we continue on to camping world in Santa Clarita? Or other?

Yike!
Amy (who hasn't posted since the rally last year, but is back on the southwest tour again this year!)

Give us a call if we can help in any way. We live east of Phoenix and 17 miles east of the Camping World in Mesa.

You all are the best! Thanks for the offer. Given that I'm not getting any reply from campingworld here. And they have two starts. And I am preaching Sunday in North Hills... We are going to head to Santa Clarita and hope our repairs hold through the day...

Appreciate the offer! I think we are both still in shock! but will forge forward. - wish us luck!

Even though you use a GPS, nothing beats the old fashioned paper MAP.
The dirt road was an alert I think.

This wont help the A/C problem and that IS a problem and hope you get it resolved soon.

But as far as a GPS, ** DO NOT ** set it to "shortest route"!!! It will do exactly that- trails, back roads, service roads...what ever it can find. I always use the "fastest" route as it will avoid the back-roads type traveling. I always follow it up with Google Maps/Earth and tweak it as necessary.

I own an older model Garmin and a new one with "updatable" maps. I wouldnt be without one! It can get you out of "jams" without having to look at a map.

"Knowing how" is everything on anything.

Darral (Good luck with your A/C...I know that's regrettable)

If you have insurance, I would contact them before doing anything else.

Yep! Yay for insurance!

And about the map... the gps has a habit of making us go in weird circles to turn left in Arizona. We need to learn to actually look at the map, not just get into interesting conversations and follow the voice commands blindly!

In this case, gps sent us into a hotel parking lot to make a big 1/2 block circle. There was a roof over part of the lot, supported by 2' black ibars. The roof was high enough, the invisible bars were not. We got just close enough and rrrrrip! Crash! (Dang!)

Lighting in parking lots is a kindness!

Anyway. A lot of discretion tape, plastic, and a bin lid are keeping the new skylights managed until we get to our destination.

Thanks for the sympathy!

If there was no signage indicating maximum height, you might have a claim against the hotel ( or the insurance company might ). If you can provide photographs of the offending t-bar and surrounds, it could be helpful to you and the insurance company.

Well no advice but GOD works in mysterious ways to guide us. Sometimes bad things to save from really bad things.

I once tore up part of an A&W overhang with a VW Camper with a rack on the top. I just paid them for the damage, got a Route beer float and that was that.

Suggest you give that old GPS to that obnoxious neighbor.

If it were mine, I think I might play baseball with that GPS unit... take a bat to it!

A GPS is supposed to warn you of obstructions in parking lots??

BTW, I also am on a larger RV forum, and many people there have a low opinion (and bitter complaints) about Camping World service. FYI.

That's a bummer. Well at least Phx is doable without AC this time of the year. Good luck on the rest of your journey.

A guy we know who worked for a trucking company told us this GPS story. He was new, bought a GPS, but did not buy the one for semi truckers, regular automobile GPS. Was going from, I think, Merced(I think) to Reno and had it on "Shortest Route".Mind you, this guy was from HI.Long story short, the park ranger at Yosemite thought he was going to the village there to deliver stuff and let him through. Long story short, he stuck the semi van in the tunnel! I have NEVER trusted the GPS since.

He was probably looking at his rear-view camera instead of the road ahead. <_<

I've also heard a lot of bad of Camping World service centers. I'd use them if they were a last resort and there was no other choices. They most likely won't know how to fix a fiberglass unit with damage. We tried to use one years ago in TX for an emergency toilet water leak and they said I'd have to wait 2 weeks. Glad they couldn't get me in. I called another shop across from Camping World and they fit us in and had it fixed the same day. Had to wait a few hours for a new toilet from out of town that they actually sent a person to go buy but at least they had it fixed and never had another problem.

About anyplace can put on an AC unit, 4 bolts and the power cable.
It's the surrounding fiberglass roof I would be concerned about.
If you had a "bulge mobile" I think camping world might be OK.
As mentioned earlier find a shop specializing in Corvttes or Boats.
You might/could need two shops, Fiberglass repair then RC repair for theAC and fantastic fan.

The Escape factory maybe??

You aren't alone

Amy,

Don't feel bad, U-Tube has a compilation of just such happenings at the 11' 8" train bridge underpass. There are some RV and MH owners there who probably didn't know they had new skylights until they got to their camping site!

https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...=11%278+bridge

I could sit and watch these all day, ...OK, so I have!
