74 perris pacer..axel problem or bearing?
hello, towed my just purchased pacer 90 miles home today. One tire detreaded on the way. No telling how long it was sitting. I'm curious about why a tire will wiggle. I jacked up one at a time, grip the tire and it will wiggle 1/8 to 1/4. Is that a typical sign of bad bearings? I'm going to have it checked out but gotta order tires first. It crossed my mind the axel might be damaged. Hope not. Appreciate any opinions..thanks

Congrats on you new trailer. As for the tire wiggle, check the lug nuts first make sure they are all there and properly tightened. That is a lot of movement. Could be bad/worn bearings or a spindle. Even the spindle shaft could have play under certain circumstances from where it is pressed or bolts to the torsion arm. If it is a torsion axle, does the torsion arm wiggle with the wheel?

Also make sure there are no broken welds or the frame itself that could allow the axle move.

Also, maybe one more notch on the castle nut.

thanks..not sure I'm going to keep it yet. DMV is always a nightmare but that and tires is first on the list. I googled 'torsion arm' and think it has them. I put it in storage so can't check arm wiggle at the moment.
appreciate the reply.

Sounds like your wheel bearings might not be properly adjusted.

It could also be a bent wheel or a radial tire with a broken belt. A good tire shop should also be able to replace or repack bearings.

I expect a 1974 trailer would need new bearings, or at least a repack and I'd pay somebody else to do it.
I take my trailer to a garage where they have a lift and a solvent tank, and the experience to do the job quickly.
Did it myself once on a tent trailer and was unable to get the castle nut set properly. In order to insert the cotter pin, the nut was either too tight or too loose. Had grease in places I didn't want it and no place to dispose of the solvent.

thanks for the relies.. I ordered tires today, also transferred ownership via AAA instead of DMV, omg what a difference. I always get sick sitting at DMV. Cleaned it a little today. The storage yard has a no working on vehicles policy so just sweep up and brought the cushions home to air in the yard. I didn't know there was a bunk bed in there. oh and the tire was flat.

You dont need an expensive Rv shop to repack or replace wheel bearings go to a local trailer repair or a local repair shop. They all know how to clean and repack wheel bearings. Save the rv repair shops for things like the fridge and heater/propane system. Check the date codes on your old tires. If they are very old that alone could be the reason they self destructed. Did you verify tire pressures before you drove off. With a trailer get in a habbit of checking tire pressure before every trip.
