The other day I pulled the jeep around back and noticed that the trailer wiring was corroded..i cleaned up the wiring and removed all the corroded bits, inspected the jeep 7 pin and went on to plug in the boler to test out the lights and brakes.. The lights worked fine but the brake controller wasn't regestering.
It took a day and a half to troubleshoot this issue.

After checking all the wire from the tow vehicle and replacing and heat shrinking the connecters, after checking all the wiring in the junction box, after attempting to use my circuit probe without a proper ground, after many hours of frustration and being under a vehicle and trailer and almost resulting to opening up the brake housing I found the issue.
Turns out the grounding bolt I placed on the frame just didnt want to work anymore... So weird!
I re wired the ground wire from the brakes to the ground wire on the 7 pin and everything worked as it should.

Gotta love the troubleshooting

Yup, 9 times out of 10 it's the ground .

I think we may be able to make our deadline!
Tons of work has gone into this little guy in such a short amount of time. It's hard to believe the interior is almost finished.

So far we have repainted the interior.
Created a hinging bed.
Installed a new water tank, foot pump, tap and on board grey water tank.
Refurbished and installed stove and oven combo.
Cut, stained and built wooden table, sink cover and counter top.
Totally rebuilt kitchen area.
Totally rebuilt Dinette area.
Built a table that can move up and down / slide forwards and backwards.
Created a template for new mattress and couch cushions.
And Fiberglassed in the upper cabinet and closet.

All that's left is flooring, install new vent, finish up electrical and some cabinetry to finish off the interior. Wowza!

There is a video on YouTube about how to make 'shaker style' or tongue and Groove cabinet doors with a tablesaw, so I challenged myself to give it a go. Can't wait till it's all together! Also caught some fish this weekend.

Happy renovating folks.

I found a box of home depots luxury vinyl plank at the restore (thrift shop for building materials) for $10 and decided to just match the colour and get another box. $80 total for flooring is not so bad.

The total area of floor I needed to cover was something just under 40sqft. This included the base boards.
The baseboard are just glued to the walls with PL premium.
I opted to use a tablesaw as opposed to hand scoring and cutting. You need to be really careful which side to cut, taking note of which direction the tongue and grooves are. I chose a random pattern and cut the pieces then used a tapping block to tighten the planks together, leaving at least 1/4" expansion room on each side.
One of the most challenging (and expensive) things was moulding. I used 3 different shapes made from wood and used a square and a tablesaw to cut the 45 degree angles.. (I don't have access to mitre saw) I ended up having 18 uniquely cut sticks. once I dry fitted the moulding, I painted it and glued it to the Baseboards. A couple pieces I had to hammer in some nails because they were stubborn.
I am now in the process of caulking all the little cracks so that no dirts can hide anywhere.

I am super excited how this little trailer is turning out! It has been an epic journey learning bits and pieces of different crafts and trades and applying it all to something functionally tangeble.

This next phase of the interior is all about under bed storage. This was a pleasure to create! From the drawings, to the measuring and to figuring out sliding hardware.

The plan is to have two 35" drawers on 28" slides. The top sides of the frame will help support the bed. Ive also left a 2.25" gap between the top edges so that a laundry hanging rack can be nestled in there for storage, this was my partner's idea!

Although my cabinetry is nowhere near perfect, it is still very satisfying to pull out a drawer on 28" slides.. Man, I'm turning into a geek!

......
"hey babes, remember that time we had to always tie the door handle to the frame so things wouldn't fall out of the boler when the door would swing open while driving? Click image for larger version

Success! We have our first coat of primer on the boler.

The first step was to remove the rubber stone guard and scrape the adhesive.
In order to do so, we pulled the old rubber guard off quite easily and then soaked the contact cement with mineral spirits for a few hours to loosen the goo. After some serious scraping followed by sanding, all the adhesive was gone.

Next step was to fill all the little dings and holes. I sand down to the bare fiberglass, wipe with acetone and then slap on some bondo. After about 10 minutes of drying I sand till smooth. I tried using duplicolour high build primer over the body filler for the tiniest nicks and I don't recommended it. It is a lacquer based primer and polyurethane paint will not adhere to it as well as if you were to just use polyester body filler. That and the cleaning solvent I chose peels it right off. At this point I also fastened in the rivets for the closet support bar and the curtain rod hooks for the acrylic windows as we will just paint over these rivets.

After that, clean! I made a mixture of tsp and water and scrubbed, scrubbed, scrubbed! Followed by a rinse wipe.

Then, sanding. This step is tedious and is much easier done with a friend. We armed ourselves with random orbit sanders and a stack of 120grit paper as well as a oscillating tool and rotary tool for harder to reach places. We could see the faded yellow, ghostly colour behind the original white top coat and sanded the whole trailer and the door down to this level. This was roughly a 6 hour job, taking lots of breaks.. Take lots of breaks.

After that, it's the acid wash. We used fiberglass solvent from Interlux to remove any remaining waxy residues and other contaminents.

Lastly, prime. The undercoat. With 2 of us working we shared a tack cloth as we went through it and started at the Mohawk, finished the roof and then she tackled below the belly band while I tackled above. We used 6" high density foam rollers and just under a quart of Interlux pre kote to do a single coat on the trailer. We did not roll and tip as this is not the top coat and we will be sanding it with 220grit before proceeding to rolling and tipping our vessel. Click image for larger version

Wow.... nice work Mark. That looks amazing.

I just bought a fully gutted shell of a '78 13 foot boler, looks just like yours.

Couple quick questions for you if you don't mind...

1. did you replace the main windows (front and back)? If yes, where did you get the lock strip from?

2. Did you put a new weather seal around the door edge? If yes, where did you get that from?

I',m in Victoria, BC, trying to find good parts.

Thanks,

Thanks Rob,
Was one hell of an adventure making it happen

I did replace the acrylic windows last minute, upon setting one of the windows down on the grass it cracked! We just got back from our maiden voyage and made the mistake of re-using the original gasket and lock strip.. Causing leaks while driving through rainy weather. I am now in the process of ordering a 1 part gasket from Argus industries https://shop.argusindustries.ca/prod...asket-wrek1663
as recommended by Ian G.

I did put new weather seal around the door edge. The old stuff was in baaad condition and I brought it to a business called Gaskettek here in Kelowna. They handed me a gasket that has sort of metal 'teeth' which grips around the edge of the door frame and stays on as long as you glue each end of the gasket.

Best of luck with your renos!

Hello fellow FGRVers,

After a great 2 month adventure last fall from B.C to Nova Scotia, Maine to Washington and back, and the Boler patiently waiting in its winter slumber for its next set of adventures, I thought I'd briefly touch base.

After our first rainstorm we realized that our front and especially the back acrylic windows were indeed.. Leaking.
I called a professional at an auto glass shop and he gave me the following tips.
Ensure the seam of the gasket is on the sides.. Not the top or bottom.
Also to make sure you have at least a foot of extra gasket of overlap.

Carry bungee cords.. I ended up having to drill in some eye hooks in the closet and the under bed storage to prevent things popping out of the closet and the drawers opening up when we went downhill.

Also.. Be prepared for anything! As we were travelling into October we ended up hitting some snow in Nebraska! It gave us great appreciation for having our little heater and draft blockers for our jalouse windows.

Happy camping folks [emoji904] Click image for larger version
