Flat top boler

Hi. I am looking at purchasing a flat top boler. It has been redone on the inside and doesn't have the support bars for the upper cabinet to the counter. Is this also a structural issue with flat tops? I know that in the egg bikers they need this for structural integrity along with the cupboard next to the door. Thoughts?

In my mind it would be even more of an issue with a flat top, since the raised trolley roof adds strength. There is little to lose and much to gain by adding the support.

The flat tops didn't have the structural support. They were the first ones built (<100) and probably didn't discover the supports were needed until the next generation were built. You can certainly add the support and this is an opportunity to make the inside truly your own. The support(s) don't have to be those (IMHO) Fugly twist supports Scamp uses.

I know some don't like them--oddly, I like them a lot and would have used them if we could've found some and made them fit our Amerigo. As it is, we tried a cut-up wine rack (no luck), looked at some 8' tall twisty garden "arms," but couldn't quite figure how to make them work, either, a variety of odds and ends at a big uptown 2nd hand store (Japanese candlesticks and some metal screens...among many other odd items), and finally just used some of our leftover marine plywood. I still like those twisty metal supports--maybe partly because they are so "vintage" looking.

I felt a LOT better once we got all the uprights in our Amerigo!

BEST

That's why I said In My Humble Opinion, heavy on the opinion

In the 15 years I've been a member here, I've seen some terrific supports used. From the Moguland wood supports with the filler that prevents splash from the stove to the bed, to polished driftwood, to stain glass, to (on and on).... to Peter and Lynne's tiki torches. this is a chance to make something that's one-of-one, instead of one-of-many and tie into a decorating "theme" if you wish.

Hi, Donna D., sure, so many ways to customize; and what more necessary place to put "something?" I heartily agree, those upright supports are needed in an egg.

And so many personal choices are so clever and attractive...

I still regret not being able to make the wine rack work.
