13ft Boler painting

Greetings adventurers!
My wonderful husband and I just bought a 1973 13ft Boler in good repair.
We want to paint it black to match our vehicle plus make it look super mod.
Has anyone had any experience painting/camping in a darker coloured camper?
My concern is that as cool as it will look from the outside we might regret how hot it gets on the inside. We have thought of painting the top a lighter shade but feel we like the look of a solid egg better

Since you have a black vehicle, I'm betting you've already answered your own question. How hot does IT get in the sun, etc.

Maybe you'd consider the bottom black and the top white. Best of both worlds.

You could create some custom black graphics for the top and tie everything together that way.

What about silver over black? Silver is still fairly reflective. Like Donna's idea of graphics to integrate. Living in AZ, it does make a difference. In a modern vehicle, AC is designed to deal with black over black in Phoenix, but in a trailer... Does the trailer even have AC? OTOH, maybe in Ontario it really doesn't matter! Where do you plan to take it?

We plan to used our trailer in the shoulder seasons as well...so I am thinking there will be times when the added warmth will be welcome. Thanks for the pic link too

Mine 1971 Boler is Black on the bottom and Grey on the top. Looks awesome and not hot at all. Black all over would look awesome but you still want to be able to live inside when camping in the hot sun. And then there is the old argument of the door color, 1/2 and 1/2 or 1 solid color?

I have a navy blue van. I recently painted the rooftop white which dropped the internal temperature by 20+ degrees.
What about masking off a section of only the unseen top and painting that white or silver...you could basically have the best of both worlds

We just painted out 17 foot boler dark blue (interlux paint). It looks great and we have not had any problems with overheating. Then again, we live in Alberta and not the southern US?

A black paint job (any color darker than white) on the top will definitely increase the inside temperature due to solar loading (sun shine). Think about a black T-shirt on a sunny day vs a white T-shirt.

Ultimately, it’s your camper and your decision.

You can always paint it again if it is too hot! Or put in A/C.

Hello Dlux. Do you have any suggestions when painting with interlux? Did you take out the windows or tape? I am deciding between painting it myself it taking in (after prepping it) to get it sprayed auto body style.

I have painted two trailers now, with no experience before. One I sprayed, the other I rolled.

Rolling it with an ultra smooth roller is easy and doesn't cost much. Not as smooth as sprayed at a shop, but looks great. I have always had the windows out, but it could be done with them in.

I have the same problem in deciding colours. I do like the idea of a dark top since it gets a bit chilly in Yukon. Not the middle of Nowhere....but you can see it from here. The dark top may be a good thing up here, but if I do a swing south (planned) next summer, it could be painful. Maybe a grey top would be a good compromise... 13' 1973 Boler.

The great thing about painting a Boler is that anything goes, keep it original, update the original colors, Paint it to match your tow vehicle, or go wild and wacky.
Paint it with a brush, a roller, spray it, or have it done professionally.
Just Google "Boler Trailer" and search images, you will have lots of samples to help make your decision (or just confuse you more)

On mine I had it professionally sprayed with Endura aviation coating using modern versions of the original colors (Polar white and a buttercup yellow)

We painted our Trillium all white!!

Our 2 tow vehicles are both black (basically) ~ 2006 Dodge Dakota and a '37 Plymouth (Cherry Coke Black) so this gives us a contrasting colour arrangement, white n black. White will go with any colour you mate up with it.

You could make snazzy decals for the trailer the same color as the tug. I decided on black decals for Ten Forward... they match the tires and trim on my white truck

I did the "roll and tip" method. First fixed any holes and cracks in the fibreglass, then sanded with 80 grit, again with 120, and finally with 220. I used grey interlux primer ( 1 coat) . You can see in one picture the top primer and bottom blue color. For the blue, i taped windows and doors rather than remove them. It took 3 coats of paint and i 220 sanded after every coat. It took a few weeks, but we are pleased with the result.

Dlux, your trailer looks amazing. I was planning on painting my 17' the same way.

Do you have any advice or a link on the best way to do the "roll and tip" method of painting?
