Scamp Roof

Found a small little leak on a roof vent of our 1981 Scamp. I realized I shouldn't have used silicone until after I read all the postings. I know I will need to eventually take off the roof vent and do it right. My question is can I actually climb onto the top of Scamp to do the work or do I need to do it all from a ladder? Don't want to end up with myself and roof on the floor! Thanks!

You can actually do the work from the inside, with the vent cover removed. It's only when you need to put the cover on that you need to LEAN over the roof.

I would say you can stand (in clean sneakers or socks) or kneel on the rounded part of the roof, close to where it rises to form the trolley roof. I have done it. The trolley roof is not a decoration, it gives the roof some more stiffness and strength and more height over the galley. Do not step in the middle of the roof. However, I can reach everything by leaning a six foot step ladder against the sides. I wrap the top with some duct tape so I do not scratch the gel coat. The top part of the 5th wheel is best accessed through the roof vent.

I guess a critical question before advising it's OK, might be, what do you weigh?
I lean a ladder against the trailer, using pipe insulation or pool noodle to protect gel coat.

Yeah, I thought of it, but held back, thinking that none of us who fit in a Scamp would be really big and heavy! Right?

Not bragging, but I'm 5'7" and 215. When I got drafted into the service I had a 28" waist line and when I got out it was 32" . Then I got a truck driving job and it jumped to 38". And then I retired. It went up hill from there. My cardiologist said he is putting me on a diet! Actually, I have lost some weight!!!
