Uhaul VT16 rebuild

Hey all!

Just to let you know, I'm retconning the previous thread under "CT16 Uhaul rebuild" as that was incorrect. I'm kind of a stickler to trying to get my facts straight (doesn't help that in 48 hours I only had 4 hours of sleep.)

Anyways, 1986 (from the blueprints, I believe, pics included) VT16 Uhaul camper. Very rare. Gentleman from Arizona owns a Uhaul outfit and I believe he got it from a coworker that had a couple of these lying around. He had a custom frame fabricated out of aluminum based off of the old one and stuck it on. (Pics will be had when the area around the trailer get's clear.) I believe he kept the old break away tongue and assembly--if that's what you call it-- on to keep it period. He also spent a lot of money to re-gel the whole thing. Some of you mentioned that a few things like vents and the like are missing. It's possible that he had them fixed and painted over. I'll let the pictures decide.

I think whoever stated about the lights being a Uhaul made aftermarket was correct. They didn't quite fit on, so my mentor/coworker took some wood and cut it into a crescent until it fit between the body and the space of the light housing. Sorry, I wasn't around when he did the process. Once he got it to fit nearly perfect to perfect, he glued it in, properly, and used some weather resistant glue to weatherproof it.


In the back, near where the bed is and along the seam, one of the plans in motion is to put custom LED lightstrips behind a semi-opaque plexiglass or something to illuminate behind the bed and up and around. Not sure how far they are wanting to go with it. In the same picture is another project of using a scissor frame inside of the table to go up and down. The trailer was reinforced with wood screwed and bonded to the fiberglass superstructure to hold up the scissor frame. Not sure how it's all going to work, or if I even have the right thought on this. I haven't asked because the company is having me clean the shop and working on the airstreams until I get better (read last paragraph).

I'll keep this thread updated as the project continues. It's due for April 1st, so it's going to come quick. If you have questions, try to make it within the first 12-18 hours of this post. I'm going into surgery this Friday to correct the septum inside my nose and will be out of commission for a week or more. While we are at it, I'm going to have to unfortunately cancel my request for a Compact 1 or 2 for the foreseeable future. The money I had saved up to buy one is now going towards my surgery.

Too bad time was spent on those tail light adapters as a Uhaul owner has made some nice ones that are fiberglass. The tongue is a surge brake assembly. Don't know why all that was kept if a new frame was made, a new axle with electric brakes would have been better.

Bob, It is a completely new surge brake assembly similar to what is used on some UHaul moving trailers.
Doubt that it is a 1986 as it has the electric outlet blanked out at the bottom of the potty room door. This was only on very early models. Likely an 85, Can't check the the born on date as the frame was replaced.
From the prints, it appears that they are revised prints all the way up to 1995 which I believe is later than they were supposed to be sold.
All in all a nice rehab.

The guys in the shop are the real talent. I'm the one that cleans up, keeps things orderly, and keeps an eye on the shop dogs and cat.
