1983 Burro 13r axle replacement

Going to replace axle on my 83 Burro with Dexter. The guy doing the work is perplexed by the torsion suspension facing forward. The local Dexter dealer is saying that Dexter won't warranty the axle if it's installed this way. Is this peculiar to Burro or common practice for this era of egg? Existing axle is only 1,200 lb. capacity, but intend upping that to 1,800-2,000 lb. I would greatly appreciate any advice on this axle project.

Hi there, the rear facing axel is common on some of the old trailers. I have replace both a boler and burro axel that were like that. I reversed both of them and replaced with flexiride axels. Slightly more expensive but they have an adjustable ride angle so if you like a bit higher ride you can get it. As long as the wheel is centered on the wheel well changing the direction of the torsion to the "correct " direction should only make the ride better.

I'd consider asking the opinion of another axle merchant. Ours had considerable RV experience, and knowledgeably adjusted the brakes for our new Dexter axle, to match the original forward-armed Boler axle.

Axle Replacement

Make sure you spend a little extra and buy an axle with trailer brakes installed. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks for the advice, but I have been pulling this Burro all over the western states for 20 years without trailer brakes. Never a problem.

Thanks for the input. I called Scamp today, even tho I don't think they use Dexter and got the same answer...older-models commonly used the rear-facing axle. Tho the guy had no idea why. I'm going to install "correctly" this time. I watched a video of the Flexiride axle(s) and was impressed. Thanks again for the help.
