*NEW OWNER*: 1971 1300 Boler needs work on BODY/FIBREGLASS, DOOR & WINDOWS.
Hello everyone!
I am the proud new owner of a 1971 1300 Boler that needs some serious love. Please bear with me as this is an entirely new world to me, and I am learning as I go!
The front of it looks as if it was backed into, as it has cracked in the front mildly (they tried to cover it with duck tape - which [shockingly] did not work) and throughout the interior as well. It looks like they MAY have tried to repair it from the inside, but there is water leaking through the duck taped area, and being contained in the small squared section underneath the front window. I am in the Edmonton Area, and am looking for someone to potentially help me with this project OR to point me in the direction of someone who can! I have attached pictures for you to view.
The previous owners attempted to reseal the windows with an unfortunate amount of silicone caulking, which I cannot wait to try and redo (argh.) I was told to pick up Silicone-Be-Gone from a local hardware store - but could use direction on what the next step would be to have them look appealing instead of .... the current situation!
Finally, the door is drastically drooping on the left side (which I have read could be due to the hinges - will place an order for the legendary hinge repair kit!) The frame and axle were both recently replaced (and look in excellent condition with only minor surface rust) so I am hoping that is therefore not the issue. Are there any other things I should look for beyond the hinge repair kit? The bottom of the door seems extremely misaligned, almost crooked, but is hard to tell if that is because of the hinges again or of a greater issue...
Any help anyone can provide for me would be greatly appreciated; as I said, I am a newborn to this entire community, but am so thankful that this exists!
Regina.

Welcome to FGRV. Yup, you're in for some fixin'. I would do the FG work first then the windows. You're going to have to pull the window for the glass work. Got to say, I think that's the most silicone I've ever seen used on an egg .

Welcome Regina
I am sure lots of folks will be along shortly to help with your questions. If they don't see them you may need to make a separate post with a specific question - Heading - looking for fiberglass repair help in Edmonton area for example.
I think you win the prize for the most silicone ever seen on a window

You might try watching a few fiberglassing videos on Youtube. I have done quite a bit of customizing of my fiberglass shell with excellent (a.k.a. invisible) results. It's a little messy, but very fast, especially in hot weather!

Whatever you do, don't try to sand that silicone off, because you can embed it in the fiberglass and then you'll have a whole new set of problems on your hands.

Hello Everyone!
Wow - so great to hear from each of you! I am in Edmonton, AB and great to see others in the same area! I have found someone to help me out with the fibreglass, and will then move onto the windows. I was told to use Silicone-Be-Gone to remove it, with a plastic blade. Is that what you guys would recommend? My friend got his hands on it yesterday and the majority of it just pulled right off. Not sure if it's due to low quality silicone, or just the severe amount of it not allowing it to dry... but, I suppose that's a good thing to have it easily come off I suppose?
For these side windows, what do you recommend I use INSTEAD of this godly silicone?
Ian - can't wait for my parcel in the mail! Whereabouts are you located?
Also - does anyone have recommendations on where to find a replacement thermocouple for the furnace? The woman I bought it off of said that's all the furnace needs to work in terms of repairs, but that she wasn't able to find the correct replacements.
Cheers everyone!

Use butyl putty tape for resealing the windows. Lots of instructions on these boards on how to do it right.

Congrats on the new to you boler. I am in north Edmonton and while I haven't worked on a boler, I may be able to give you some pointers on the fiberglass repair. Had to do some repairs to my old Ventura which had cracks right through the shell. Its not that hard a job working with fiberglass but can be messy. Nice thing is if you get it wrong, you can just grind it out and do it again. Send me a PM and I will send you my contact info.

Not to hijack your thread Regina, but I too just acquired a boler 1300 (after searching for 3 years for the right one!), and am in the Edmonton area. I'd like input on this post:

I'll have to pull my windows and do bodywork before I paint. I was just going to sand the silicone off, but won't now. What would be better? Razor blade? I don't care about gouges as I'll be doing a bit of filling anyway.
Thanks,
Mick

What worked great for me was to wet a rag with acetone, and lay it over the area for a bit. I covered the rag with aluminum foil to keep it in place and prevent rapid evaporation. After fifteen or twenty minutes the silicone will be the consistancy of toothpaste and you can swipe the rag over the silicone which will remove a good deal of it. The hit it with a plastic scraper to get more, and wipe it down again. If someone has put a lot of silicone on, you may have to repeat the process once or twice. It's soooo much easier than try to scrape all of it off.

We purchased a replacement thermocouple at our local rv dealer. We have a SurfSide, not a Boler, but I expect that it is the same part for an old furnace. If they don't have it, they can probably order it. Have fun!!
