Help identifying a hitch on my scamp
We have a hitch on our scamp. Anyone seen one like this? Is it for a certain bike rack? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Because of the two holes for breakaway chain attachment, that looks like a receiver for a flat bar mounting class 1 hitch.
You don't mention what model Scamp you have, but if it's a 19', the bad news is that it looks like someone was tandem towing a boat or other light trailer behind your Scamp.
I don't think that tandum towing is legal with any of the others, but that might not have stopped someone who had a boat to pull to the fishin' hole.

Really dunno what you'd call it but it looks a lot like a receptacle on an old farm tractor that we had when I was a kid (1940's/50's). Best I remember it was bolted to the hydraulic lift drawbar & accepted a flat steel bar that was fastened in the receptacle with a large (1" maybe[?]) pin. We had several of the flat bars, each with a different 'business' end (pintle, ball, or just another hole to accept a clevis) for use with different pieces of farm equipment... May be completely off base here but that's the only thing it looks like to me.
Looks like the oval holes on either side may be for safety chain attachment??

My best guess is that it was a custom made for holding some sort of gear holder (which may also have been custom) on the rear of the trailer.

Well this is what it's for. Found this in one of the closets. Is this safe? Even for a small boat?

That is a Class I Hitch receiver.
I have the draw bar for one in my hitch cabinet.
You should be able to pick one up at any RV place.
If not ... Contact me for the part.
Sorry, I failed to read your last post...looks like you figured it out!
I would not suggest towing anything behind your Scamp, eventhough it has been done.
There are several bike racks which would mount to that drawbar however.

Tandem towing is legal at least in Ca if you have a class 1 , or is it A, drivers license.

You are correct Frank but the first trailer has to be a 5th wheel, not a bumper pull. Don't ask how I know and I had a class A.

In some states/provinces in NA regardless as to whether you have a 5th wheel or a Class A drivers license a tandem tow is simple not legal. In others where tandem is legal there may also be a restriction on the total length of the tandem set up.

Is your scamp a 5th wheel?
In Alberta, it is perfectly legal to tow another trailer behind a 5th wheel. I have seen monster 5th wheels towing monster utility trailers. Rigs that dwarfed what was probably a very large pickup.

Mine is not a fifth wheel. It's a 13. I thought of trying to find a bike rack to fit the flat bar style hitch.

That would be the best use of it. But be aware that it is recommended that a bumper mounted hitch, on a trailer is connect to another cross member, other then the bumper. A bike rack puts a lot of torque on the hitch.

+1 on what Dave said about torque.
Would add that weight placed that far back will take weight off of the tongue, you may need to adjust your loading inside the trailer to maintain stability. Easier to get sway with weight hanging off the back bumper.
People put rear racks on FGRV's with success, just have to adjust and compensate for it.

Look underneath. If the hitch is connected to frame at points other than just the back bumper it would probably be solid. If that is the case no harm in having it and it may be useful. If it's attached well I would just hit it with a can of black spray paint to touch it up and keep my options open. If it is just bolted or welded to the back bumper probably better to remove if not going to modify to reach frame proper.
Lots of people have added bike racks and metal storage trays with bins made to go into a hitch receiver. You just have to use common sense about how much you put back there. And how far you extend out. Closer in to back wall works better than something sticking 4 ft. back.
If the hitch is solidly mounted no reason you could not put a couple of bikes on the back. Or a shelf with bin for "stuff" you want to have available but not in the camper.
You just want to avoid thinking that because the shelf says it can handle 500 lbs. or the hitch can handle a few hundred lbs. that putting that much weight on the back of the trailer will be a good idea from a handling perspective. You may end up wanting to stow some heavy gear further forward to balance the trailer weight front to rear.
If you won't use it nothing wrong with removing it but I don't think anyone intended to scare you off from exploring options for using it. More just a heads up.

Thanks a lot. I'll crawl under and see where and how it's mounted. As far as painting, yes. I need to do the whole bumper. Someone did it once before and over sprayed all over the gelcoat. That is another project I need to take care of.
