Suger's Scamp Awning

Hi, had to take a trip, but when I returned "THE BOX" had arrived!


The awning issue was after patcheing all those holes I surley was NOT going to drill a new one if I could avoid it.

The Scamp awning let rain drip down the side of the camper and was too small for 4 folks and a table

So I think this might work,

TA-DA!!


Its an Event tent by coleman







It comes in a bag and was quite easy to put up







And it is large enough it can cover half the Scamp so you keep your door open while it rains!!





















I do have to modify the one side post's and I will show in next posting, and I think I will have the guy down the street make some zippered walls with screening to bug proof it

So here's the spot I have to modify, looking for opinions















Because the arch sits on the Scamp I have to make some type of tent stake,

Something with a flat plate on a post with hole in it so we can attach the bottom "thingy" like it was sitting on the ground

Wow!! that looks nice!
I must say though, that the water down the side with the Scamp awning is permanently and invisibly fixed for 93 cents with a piece of 1/2" pvc pipe and a dab of silicone. At 8X6 the 4 who share it must be friendly, but that goes for the Scamp as well.

BTW; your awning serves as a fly as well, another advantage, keeping the Scamp cooler!

Instead of modifying the base why not modify the tent? Have it cut and stitched a bit so thatit would "form" better around the camper? Just throwing out ideas here. Also, couldn't you just move it so that it covers the whole trailer and it would fit under it? It seems like there would still be enough room under the remaining part. Keeping the camper cooler in the blazing hot sun is the appealing part to me although it looks like a 16 footer would be a no-go.

Have you tried simply turning the awning a bit?
Rather than trying to keep it parallel with the trailer along its length, what happens if you offset it by 30 or 45 degrees?
What happens if you put one leg on the tongue?

Be careful, your liable to get a slapping for that. Make sure its consensual first.

That's a great idea about adding a stitched part to form the tent, when Mr. Hayes (who's a really talented upholsterer) comes to look for the bug screen I' ll ask Thanks

I absolutely love that! My wife and I made our own screen room and velcroed it to the awning, but the awning is so small, and I'm 6'1" and my head rubs on it, and its just kind of annoying. Where did you buy it?

EDIT: I think I found it. Is it the Event 14? I found that at Canadian Tire $199.99 Canadian.

Coleman makes screens to fit. Might be cheaper to buy those than custom.

Mr Roy, thanks for the info, and I will check it out. I was going to have them made because I do not have the tent set up flat as originally designed, but I will try and locate them and compare prices, I may only have to modify them.

A footnote, this event tent does come in 14', but I think in can only be purchased new outside of the states, go figure, something cool comes around and then its not available

It could be worse, you could live in Canada where we get most things a year later!

The way I see it, we use the USA as a testing grounds. The new Iphone4 reception problems and fix have shown up long before the phone is available on this side of the border.

yes that is the same thing I have except it is 14' square vs. the one I have is 15' square,I do not think the side walls will work on mine, but thanks for the offer

Can this be set up by one lady (and a small dog) ?
What if you gave up a scoshe more space under the awning and moved the trailer further underneath? It would completely shade the top of the trailer that way.

Miss Pam, setting it up was fairly easy with two, I think it could be done with one but I believe a means of a step stool or bucket would be needed for us short folks,

the four arc's are put together and then you have the center cross beam, I believe if you did make the tent cover the whole of the trailer it would be an-advantage, but I see that only the 14' square is only available at this Canadian Tire (what is that? a northern Wally World? ) I dont know if the 14' would work the same. I will this week, take down and assemble if possible by myself and have Adrian take pictures as I do, how's that? Regards SUGER

Heck, you're making me feel guilty - Please don't rush to do the extra work of putting it up yourself just on my account. However, if you do decide that you want to see how/if it can be done, and post photos, that would be very nice of you!

I just saw a possible solution to your problem on another site. The picture I saw showed a canopy being raised up by jack stands. The jack stands they were using looked exactly like the ones you have on the back of your trailer. I hope that helps!

thanks everyubody for the ideas. I was going for some welded thing, and my friend came up with a real simple one ( he always does that)

it is using sch 40 electical conduit, all I had to do was sand down the exterior to fit into the bottom plate






I still have to stitch a piece of webbing to extend the tie-down, and the extensions made the arc a little higher






It has rained pretty heavy this week and the event passed the rain test, so it dried out pretty quick and tod I was going to do the tear down and put up seeing it one can do it.

Miss Pam, well I took down the tent and put it back up, all by myself, easy one person job.
For that metter the dog would like watching I suppose.

I did take photos of the process but it was about 15 and I thought the moderators would not like such a long post.

So if anybody pick's one up and wishes to see how to put it up let me know and I will submit the pic's.
